ABOUT THE EMPLOYER
On behalf of our client, Shackan Indian Band, we are searching for a Homemaker/Care Aide located in the Shackan Community, 40 minutes from Merritt, BC. The Shackan Indian Band, also known as “14 Mile,” is a proud Nlaka’pamux First Nations government located in the Nicola Valley of British Columbia. The bands who make up the Scw'exmx are, in turn, members of the Nlaka'pamux Nation. The Nlaka'pamux traditional territory extends well into the State of Washington, as far north as Ashcroft, as far east as Douglas Lake and as far West as Lillooet.
All the communities of the Nlaka'pamux Nation hold title to this territory, encompassing thousands of square kilometers collectively. The Shackan Indian Band has three reserves. The majority of band members reside on the main reserve, located along the Nicola River, which has a total land base of 6,413 acres. The Papsilqua Reserve is located to the northeast of Papsilqua and Skuhun Creek with a total of 730 acres. The Soldatquo Reserve is located a few kilometres north of Shackan with the total land area. of 2,429 acres.

ABOUT THE ROLE
Reporting directly to the Community Wellness Manager, the Homemaker/Care Aide provides essential home and community-based support services to help clients, particularly Elders, maintain independence, comfort, dignity, and safety in their own homes. This role supports individuals who may be recovering from illness or surgery, living with a disability, or otherwise requiring assistance with daily living tasks.
The Homemaker/Care Aide works collaboratively as part of the Community Wellness team, alongside the Community Wellness Manager, Health Navigator, Education/Social Development Coordinator, and Community Wellness Support Worker.
In this role, the Homemaker contributes to coordinated, culturally grounded care and community wellness initiatives that align with each client’s care plan and the community’s values, traditions, and wellness goals.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Elder / Client Support & Personal Assistance (Tasks will vary depending on the individual care plan)
- Assist with activities of daily living (ADLs), including:
- Dressing and undressing (including compression socks)
- Grooming and personal hygiene (showering, bathing, shaving)
- Toileting support and assistance with incontinent products, catheter care, and hygiene reminders
- Mobility and ambulation support, ensuring safe and accessible living spaces.
- Support safe transfers (e.g., bed to chair) using proper body mechanics and approved techniques.
- Provide medication reminders in accordance with Shackan policy (e.g., blister packs, eye drops, medicated creams).
- Observe and report changes in a client’s condition, mood, or functional abilities to the Community Wellness Manager.
- Encourage independence, self-care, and participation in daily activities whenever possible.
- Provide companionship, social engagement, and emotional support in a respectful, client-centered manner.
Home Support & Household Management
- Perform general housekeeping duties, including sweeping, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, and tidying living spaces.
- Clean and disinfect kitchens, bathrooms, and frequently touched surfaces.
- Wash, dry, fold, and organize laundry and linens; change bedding as required.
- Assist with meal planning, grocery shopping, and household supply organization (with or without the client present).
- Prepare nutritious meals and snacks according to individual dietary needs or restrictions.
- Maintain organized and safe household environments, including cupboards, pantries, and storage areas.
- Assist with basic pet care tasks such as feeding, walking, or cleaning litter boxes, if applicable.
Community Wellness & Cultural Support
- Assist with community wellness programs and activities, including occasional after-hours events.
- Support various culture camps and seasonal activities.
- Assist with planning and delivering prevention-focused workshops, life skills activities, parent supports, and land-based wellness initiatives.
- Participate in community outreach to identify needs, gather feedback, and encourage participation in wellness and cultural programs.
- Help build and maintain positive working relationships with internal staff, external partners, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members.
- Promote strength-based, culturally safe, and trauma-informed practices in all aspects of work.
- Support cultural activities such as drumming, singing, beading, language sessions, and community gatherings.
- Coordinate or assist with weekly or biweekly wellness or cultural sessions for Elders, youth, and families.
- Support language revitalization efforts by incorporating Nlaka’pamux language into daily work where appropriate and demonstrating a willingness to learn and use the language respectfully.
Safety, Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain a clean, safe, and hazard-free environment following infection control and safety standards.
- Follow client-specific health and safety plans, including fall prevention and mobility guidelines.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow universal precautions.
- Accurately document services provided, client interactions, and any concerns in daily logs or digital systems.
- Respect client confidentiality and uphold privacy and ethical standards at all times.
Communication & Team Collaboration
- Communicate professionally and respectfully with clients, families, supervisors, and team members.
- Participate in team meetings, care conferences, and training as required.
- Follow direction from the Community Wellness Manager, SCHSS nurses, IH nurses, and other care staff.
- Support continuity of care by reporting concerns promptly and accurately.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications
- Experience in home support, caregiving, community health, or a related field preferred.
- Home Support Worker, Care Aide, Personal Support Worker, or Homemaker training/certification preferred.
- Valid First Aid and CPR certification.
- Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
- Compassionate, patient, and respectful approach to client care.
- Strong ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Effective communication, organization, and time management skills.
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license with access to a reliable vehicle.
- A company vehicle is provided; use of a personal vehicle may occasionally be required and will be reimbursed at approved mileage rates.
- Ability to use basic computer systems, including Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Teams, and other workplace software.
- Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector screening.

A company vehicle will be available for use for travel to the Shackan reserve. However, there may be times when you’ll need to use your own vehicle, and mileage will be reimbursed. Some evening or weekend work may also be required to support community activities, approved overtime can be taken as paid overtime or exchanged for time off in lieu.
