The Economic Development Department at Magnetawan First Nation supports the growth and sustainability of local economic opportunities that benefit community members, families, and future generations. The department works to strengthen partnerships, attract investments, and create jobs while aligning with the Nation’s values and long-term vision for self-sufficiency and prosperity.


Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Economic Development Officer (EDO) will plan, coordinate, and implement economic development projects and initiatives. This includes supporting community entrepreneurs, accessing funding opportunities, developing business plans, and liaising with external partners. The ideal candidate is highly organized, community-minded, and passionate about Indigenous economic empowerment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Identify, develop, and manage economic development projects that align with community priorities.
  • Assist community members with small business planning, entrepreneurship training, and access to funding.
  • Research and apply for grants and funding programs that support economic initiatives.
  • Prepare reports, proposals, business plans, and presentations for Chief and Council, funders, and stakeholders.
  • Build partnerships with industry, government agencies, Indigenous organizations, and neighbouring municipalities.
  • Coordinate and promote local employment, training, and business development opportunities.
  • Support the development and administration of community-owned businesses or joint ventures.
  • Maintain economic development records, performance tracking, and project files.
  • Promote economic self-sufficiency through culturally relevant planning and capacity-building.
  • Attend training, workshops, and conferences related to economic development.
  • Other duties as assigned.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, EXPERIENCES, AND SKILLS:

  • Post-secondary education in business administration, economic development, community planning, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience in economic development, Indigenous business, or project coordination.
  • Strong understanding of Indigenous economic development strategies and funding structures.
  • Grant writing and proposal development experience is an asset.
  • Strong communication, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, budget planning tools, and digital project management platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in collaboration with community members and stakeholders.
  • Experience working in First Nation communities is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Anishinaabemowin and Anishinaabe culture is an asset.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
