Personal suitability and cultural awareness

To provide culturally safe services, support and guidance to children and families. provides direct family services with respect, empathy, and compassion and a keen interest in and awareness of historical barriers to access of services experienced by First Nations people. An understanding of and support for families' choices of traditional and/or alternative practices is essential. The Cultural Family Home Support Worker will be required to attend community ceremonies, gatherings and family outings.

About the position:

The Cultural Family Home Support Worker is a vital member of the Kwantlen First Nation’s family wellness team. Reporting to the Cultural Family Home Manager, this role supports families and children living in the Cultural Family Home through a 24/7 model of care. The Support Worker provides strength-based, culturally safe, and solution-focused services that reflect Kwantlen values, traditions, and community priorities.

 

The role supports the overall wellness of the children and families, including physical, emotional, spiritual, and cultural wellbeing. The Support Worker acts as both a direct service provider and an advocate—fostering a safe, trusting, and empowering environment.

 

What will you do:

·      Provide culturally safe, respectful, and compassionate support services to children and families

·      Support families in a strength-based and wraparound model of care, grounded in Indigenous values and community connection

·      Facilitate or support culturally relevant programming, including land-based activities, healing practices, parenting circles, and community involvement

·      Collaborate with Elders, cultural mentors, Traditional Healers, and Knowledge Keepers to ensure cultural safety and relevance in service delivery

·      Build and maintain trusting, supportive relationships with families through one-on-one support and family/community engagement

·      Promote healing and parenting through trauma-informed, culturally rooted care

·      Support family reunification processes and help families navigate complex systems and services

·      Act as a referral agent and advocate to help individuals access culturally relevant programs and supports

·      Develop and work with culturally appropriate service providers to meet the specific needs of families in the Family Home

·      Oversee daily activities and contribute to the development, implementation, and evaluation of family support programming

·      Participate in family outings, community gatherings, and cultural ceremonies as part of the relationship-building and support process

·      Establish and maintain effective partnerships with internal KFN teams and external social service agencies

·      Provide crisis intervention, problem-solving support, and emotional regulation support to families and children as needed

·      Maintain accurate, timely documentation including reports, case notes, and progress updates

·      Demonstrate reliability and motivation in completing daily responsibilities, ensuring the Family Home is clean, safe, and welcoming

·      Promote and participate in outreach efforts from a culturally informed lens

·      Other duties as assigned by the Cultural Family Home Manager

 

Lived & Learned Experience

  • Certificate or diploma in Social Work, Child & Youth Care, Indigenous Studies, or a related human services field
  • A combination of education and relevant experience will be considered
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working with Indigenous families, children, or in a residential care setting
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed practices, lateral kindness, and culturally safe care
  • Strong understanding of intergenerational trauma and systemic barriers faced by First Nations families
  • Familiarity with traditional and/or alternative wellness practices and an openness to family choice in care
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening
  • Current First Aid and CPR Level C (or willingness to obtain)
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and occasional overnights
