THE POSITION

The Farm Mechanic & Equipment Operator is a mechanic‑focused role responsible for diagnosing, repairing, maintaining, and ensuring the safe operation of a wide range of agricultural and heavy equipment. In addition, the role supports day‑to‑day and seasonal farm operations, providing essential labour and equipment operation during busy periods such as seeding and harvest.

The ideal candidate is dependable, mechanically strong, proactive, and comfortable balancing shop work with hands‑on field responsibilities.


Primary Tasks and Accountabilities

Mechanical & Technical Duties

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair agricultural equipment and heavy machinery both in the shop and in the field.
  • Perform regular servicing, lubrication, inspections, and preventative maintenance for tractors, combines, sprayers, semis, and other farm equipment.
  • Conduct mechanical repairs including welding, fabrication, and component replacement where capable.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance logs; report equipment issues, breakdowns, or safety concerns promptly.
  • Support seasonal equipment readiness planning and assist with identifying long‑term maintenance needs.


Equipment Operation & Farm Support

  • Safely operate farm machinery including tractors, loaders, sprayers, grain carts, and combines during key production activities.
  • Assist with seeding, spraying, harvest operations, grain handling, and storage management.
  • Support farmyard, shop, and building upkeep, seasonal preparation, and general farm labour tasks as required.
  • Participate in grain receiving, cleaning, processing, and monitoring grain quality.
  • Uphold safety standards and contribute to a clean, safe, and organized work environment.


Communication and Compliance

  • Communicate daily with the Farm Manager regarding priorities, progress, safety and equipment issues.
  • Maintain accurate work logs, equipment records and other documentation as required.
  • Participate in training and skill development as needed.
  • Take initiative in maintaining compliance with all industry and environmental standards.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Proficient in English (required).
  • Completion of an Agriculture Equipment Technician Certificate, Heavy Equipment Truck and Transport Technician Certificate, Industrial Mechanic Certificate, or equivalent training and mechanical experience will be considered.
  • Mechanical aptitude: experience in carpentry, welding, or small trades is an asset.
  • Valid Class 1A driver’s license (preferred or willingness to obtain).
  • Experience operating large farm machinery preferred.
  • Previous farming experience is an asset.
  • Honest, communicative, and willing to bring issues forward.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Willing to learn and train on the job.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
  • Must have own vehicle, trucks available for use during farm work.
  • Physically capable of demanding outdoor work in all weather conditions.
  • Physically capable of lifting to 50 lbs and working in confined spaces or at heights.


WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Average hours: 40 to 60 hours per week, with extended hours required during seeding and harvest.
  • Combination of shop, yard, field, and equipment operation work.
  • Work setting: rural area, remote location.
  • Fast-paced environment, working under pressure, tight deadlines, and physically demanding.
  • Combination of sitting, standing, and walking.
  • Year-round outdoor work in varying weather conditions (heat, humidity, cold).
  • Exposure to dusty conditions.


COMPENSATION

Compensation ranges from $90,000 - $120,000, based on relevant skills and experience.
