ABOUT ALBERTA CANOLA

Alberta Canola Producers Commission is a farmer funded, elected, and directed organization.

Established in 1989 and based in Edmonton – Alberta Canola is a not-for-profit organization that represents over 12,000 canola farmers in Alberta. Through a service charge of $1.75 per tonne collected on canola sold in Alberta, it supports the long-term success of canola farmers through research, extension, consumer engagement, and advocacy. Canola is one of Canada’s most important and profitable field crops – it is an oilseed crop that is grown on over 6 million acres in Alberta. It is a significant economic driver, contributing $12 billion in direct and indirect benefits to the provincial economy through domestic and export sales of seed, oil, and meal for livestock feed. Canola’s total employment impact in Alberta is almost 67,000 people.

ABOUT THE ROLE

This role reports to the Manager of Government Relations and Industry Affairs and supports Alberta Canola’s policy development and advocacy efforts through monitoring and analyzing provincial legislation and regulatory developments. The Policy Analyst will track key activities such as committee work, consultations, and policy changes, assessing their impact on canola farmers and the broader agriculture sector. This position is highly hands-on, involving policy research, maintaining the Alberta Lobbyist Registry, and preparing clear, concise written materials including policy briefs, position papers, weekly summaries for leadership and the Board, and content for newsletters and annual reports.

Working in a collaborative, multi-stakeholder environment, the Policy Analyst will engage with internal committees as well as external partners including TAC, CCGA, CCC, and GGC. The role includes supporting advocacy initiatives, drafting coordinated messaging, maintaining website and social content, and assisting with campaigns to raise awareness of key policy issues. There is also a strong coordination component, including scheduling government meetings, preparing briefing materials, supporting industry events, researching speakers, and presenting to committees and the Board as required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Monitor and track provincial legislative and regulatory developments impacting agriculture and canola producers
• Analyze proposed policies and assess potential impacts on the organization and industry
• Prepare policy briefs, position papers, and written materials for internal and external stakeholders
• Develop weekly policy summaries and updates for management and the Board of Directors
• Maintain and update the Alberta Lobbyist Registry
• Support government relations communications, including newsletters and annual reports
• Collaborate with internal teams to align on advocacy strategies and messaging
• Participation in industry committees and meetings (e.g., TAC, CCGA, CCC, GGC)
• Assist with advocacy initiatives, including campaign development and stakeholder engagement
• Coordinate government meetings, lobby days, and prepare briefing materials
• Develop and maintain policy-related website and social media content
• Present findings and updates to committees and the Board as required
• Conduct research to support events, including identifying policy-related speakers
• Stay informed on political developments and emerging policy trends impacting the sector

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

• Strong understanding of public policy, government processes, and regulatory environments, ideally within Alberta or Canadian agriculture
• Proven research and analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex legislation and assess impacts
• Exceptional written communication skills, including experience drafting policy briefs, reports, and stakeholder communications
• Ability to translate complex information into clear, concise messaging for diverse audiences (e.g., Board, government, industry)
• Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
• Experience with stakeholder engagement and relationship building across industry, government, and internal teams
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment
• Proactive, detail-oriented, and self-motivated with strong initiative
• Knowledge of, or interest in agriculture, agri-food policy, or canola industry is considered a strong asset
• Experience supporting advocacy, government relations, or communications initiatives is preferred
• Comfortable with presentations and preparing materials for senior leadership and boards
• Proficiency with digital tools and content management (e.g., website updates, social media, basic data tracking)
