JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Senior Tax Strategy Advisor, Family Office

REPORTS TO: Director of Tax Strategy

DEPARTMENT: Tax Strategy

LOCATION: Fully remote, US-based

COMPENSATION: Competitive, commensurate with experience; plus annual bonus and equity opportunity

TYPE: Exempt, full-time

Harrison Gray Search is partnering with one of the country’s larger fee-only, majority employee-owned RIAs to identify a Senior Tax Strategy Advisor, Family Office. If you have spent fifteen or more years doing advanced tax, estate, and wealth transfer work for ultra-high-net-worth and family office clients, and you are ready to join a firm where tax strategy sits at the center of the client relationship rather than at the edge of it, this is worth a conversation.

What Makes This Different

Our client runs a fully integrated wealth model. Tax strategy is embedded alongside financial planning, investment management, and estate planning, and your work drives client decisions in real time rather than landing after the fact. You will not be shouting your recommendations across a wall to an advisor who may or may not act on them. You will be at the table with the lead advisor, co-advisor, and planning specialists on the firm’s most sophisticated engagements, coordinating with the client’s estate counsel and outside professionals, and shaping the planning that gets implemented.

The client roster is the other reason to look. You will advise ultra-high-net-worth individuals, multi-generational families, and business owners with balance sheets or investable assets of twenty-five million dollars or greater, with meaningful exposure to families at one hundred million and above. You will design and implement advanced wealth transfer and estate planning techniques including QPRTs, IDGTs, GRATs, ILITs, SLATs, and CRTs, and you will advise on complex entity structures, business succession, liquidity events, and the tax implications of closely held business interests. This is craft work at the highest end of the market, inside a platform with the scale, technology, and cross-functional support to serve those families well.

The Work

You will provide advanced tax planning and advisory services to the firm’s family office and ultra-high-net-worth clients, developing proactive strategies that align with each client’s financial, legacy, and business objectives. You will review tax plans and estimates, research complex transactions, and translate your findings into recommendations that clients can act on and advisors can implement.

You will design and advise on complex business and investment structures, including FLLCs and partnerships, with consideration for formation, succession planning, and buy/sell agreements. You will advise on and help implement advanced wealth transfer techniques in coordination with clients’ estate counsel. You will advise on business succession planning and the tax implications of liquidity events, ownership transitions, and closely held business interests.

You will review and sign complex individual, trust, partnership, foundation, and corporate returns, and you will coordinate and deliver multi-family, multi-return tax packages so that a family’s full picture is handled as one integrated engagement rather than a stack of independent filings. You will lead the resolution of complex federal and state tax notices and examinations, coordinating with taxing authorities, outside counsel, and other specialists as needed.

You will manage assigned client relationships, projects, and seasonal workflow to ensure timely, accurate deliverables, and you will provide subject-matter tax expertise to clients, advisors, and firm leadership. You will support business development by representing the firm’s tax strategy capabilities in prospective client meetings, and you will contribute subject-matter expertise to thought leadership, education, advisor training, client presentations, and COI engagement.

You will serve as a mentor and role model for the tax and planning team, developing junior tax strategy team members through technical guidance, case reviews, hands-on coaching, and knowledge sharing. You will also contribute to the ongoing refinement of the firm’s internal policies, procedures, tools, and processes for a maturing, fully integrated tax strategy practice.

Who You Are

You are a seasoned tax professional with deep experience serving the most sophisticated families in the country. You have spent the majority of your career advising clients with balance sheets at twenty-five million and above, and you can hold your own in a room with a family’s estate counsel, outside CPAs, trust officers, and investment consultants. You are as comfortable designing a GRAT or a SLAT structure as you are leading the resolution of a complex federal examination, and you present nuanced recommendations in language that clients and their advisor teams can actually act on.

You are looking for a role where your work drives real client outcomes across an integrated wealth platform, not one where tax operates in a silo. You want to work on the firm’s most consequential family relationships, and you want to help build the practice that serves them. You are a natural coach to junior tax professionals, and you take pride in developing the next generation of family office tax talent.

What We Are Looking For

  • Fifteen or more years of experience in comprehensive tax and financial planning, with the majority spent advising clients with balance sheets or investable assets of twenty-five million dollars or greater; meaningful experience with one hundred million and above a plus
  • Active CPA license or Enrolled Agent (EA) designation
  • Proven client-facing experience in tax planning and advisory roles for family office or ultra-high-net-worth clients
  • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing advanced wealth transfer and estate planning strategies, including QPRTs, IDGTs, GRATs, ILITs, SLATs, and CRTs
  • Experience advising on complex entity structures, including FLLCs and partnerships, with consideration for formation, succession planning, and buy/sell agreements
  • Experience mentoring or informally guiding junior tax professionals; formal supervisory experience is not required
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required; degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration preferred
  • Master’s in Taxation (MST) or LL.M. in Taxation strongly preferred
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) a plus, particularly for candidates with estate planning or trust and fiduciary specialization
  • CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification or Personal Financial Specialist (PFS™) credential, or willingness to earn one within your first year. This is core to the integrated model, and the firm will support you through it.
  • Familiarity with Thomson Reuters UltraTax, CCH Access, Karbon, Practice CS, BNA, Planner CS, Holistiplan, and online or print tax research resources preferred

You should be a strong communicator, a careful analytical thinker, and someone who genuinely enjoys helping sophisticated families and their advisor teams see the strategy behind the structure.

What You Get

  • Competitive base salary, commensurate with experience
  • Annual team-based incentive bonus opportunity
  • Equity ownership opportunity following demonstrated performance in the role. This is a majority employee-owned firm, and long-term equity is a real component of total compensation for people who stay and perform.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage effective day one
  • HSA/FSA options, company-paid life, AD&D, and disability
  • 401(k) with company match (Roth and Traditional)
  • Generous PTO, at least 10 paid holidays, parental leave, and summer hours
  • Fully remote work environment

Interview Process
