About the client:
Harrison Gray Search has partnered with an established, family-oriented waste and recycling company in Grand Rapids to hire a Part-Time Accountant. The company has served West Michigan for 30 years and is independent, not a national hauler with layers of corporate process. Employees tend to stay, and turnover is very low.
The role:
The company is bringing its day-to-day accounting in-house and needs a hands-on accountant to own it in QuickBooks. Today this work is outsourced to a third party; you'll be the responsive, on-site person who keeps the books current and accurate.
This is a practical bookkeeping and accounting role, not a tax or CPA-level position. Tax work stays with outside advisors.
What you'll do:
- Run accounts payable: enter and code vendor bills, manage payment runs, and keep vendor records current.
- Run accounts receivable: post customer payments, follow up on past-due accounts, and keep aging reports accurate.
- Own the QuickBooks file: bank and credit card reconciliations, journal entries, and a clean chart of accounts.
- Support customer billing and invoicing as needed.
- Assist with payroll processing and related entries.
- Support month-end close and produce basic financial reports for management.
- Serve as the go-to contact for accounting questions from staff and outside tax advisors.
Required experience:
- Strong, hands-on QuickBooks experience: you know the ins and outs, not just data entry.
- Proven experience running full-cycle AP and AR.
- Comfort with reconciliations, journal entries, and month-end tasks.
- Organized, accurate, and able to work independently on a part-time schedule.
- Able to work on-site in Grand Rapids three days per week.
Preferred experience:
- Payroll processing experience.
- Background in waste, logistics, trucking, construction, or another route- or service-based industry.
- Associate's or bachelor's degree in accounting, or equivalent experience. A CPA is not required.
Why join
- A permanent role with a stable, 30-year-old local company, not a temp or contract gig.
- Part-time hours (20–25 per week) with a predictable three-day on-site schedule.
- Competitive pay of $30–$40 per hour.
- A family-oriented culture with very low turnover and a team that sticks together.
- Real ownership: you'll build and run the in-house accounting function and see the impact directly.
