Mechanical Engineer – Custom Machinery
Location: South Haven, MI
General Overview
The Mechanical Design Engineer will lead projects from concept to release, working closely with manufacturing, vendor partners, and controls engineering to bring custom-designed machinery to life. This position offers the opportunity to apply advanced SolidWorks skills, contribute to product innovation, and directly impact customer operations through high-quality, tailored equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in cross-functional design teams to develop custom machine solutions for the food industry.
- Create 3D models and detailed engineering drawings in SolidWorks (part design, assemblies, and sheet metal).
- Manage Bill of Materials (BOM) entry into the ERP system for accurate purchasing and manufacturing workflows.
- Collaborate with internal and external manufacturing teams to design cost-effective components.
- Partner with component vendors to specify purchased parts and obtain cost/delivery estimates.
- Work closely with Controls Engineering on the specification of sensors, motors, and other system elements.
- Generate assembly and detail prints for release to purchasing and fabrication teams.
- Provide technical support to field service teams, addressing customer issues on deployed equipment.
- Understand company workflows and how engineering integrates with purchasing, manufacturing, and service.
Desired Education, Skills, and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred; equivalent experience considered.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in custom machinery and/or automation design (experience in food industry machinery preferred).
- Proficiency in SolidWorks (Assembly and Part Creation required; Sheet Metal and PDM experience a plus).
- Strong understanding of mechanical design, manufacturability, and engineering processes.
- Ability to collaborate across departments and with external vendors effectively.
- Strong problem-solving skills with a focus on practical, cost-conscious solutions.
