The Role:


Our client is seeking a strategic, results-driven Vice President of Field Underwriting to lead its commercial lines underwriting function. This executive role is responsible for driving underwriting profitability, modernizing platforms, developing talent, and advancing operational excellence. Ideal candidates will bring a strong track record in portfolio management, cross-functional leadership, and innovation in underwriting practices.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Strategic Leadership & Execution
  • Lead development and execution of underwriting strategies across commercial lines to achieve profitable growth.
  • Represent underwriting performance in senior leadership forums and contribute to company-wide planning initiatives.
  • Team & Relationship Management
  • Build and lead a high-performing, geographically dispersed underwriting team.
  • Partner with sales, actuarial, claims, and finance to align underwriting strategy with enterprise goals.
  • Evaluate and enhance agency relationships to support profitable growth.
  • Operational & Technical Excellence
  • Drive modernization of underwriting platforms, including AI tools, real-time data, and digital workflows.
  • Oversee underwriting governance, authority delegation, and risk quality standards.
  • Monitor portfolio performance with data-driven tools and predictive analytics.
  • Talent Development & Change Management
  • Champion change across teams, fostering a collaborative, high-performance culture.
  • Lead structured training, mentoring, and upskilling initiatives to support employee growth and retention.


What You Bring:

  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degrees or designations preferred.
  • 10+ years in commercial underwriting, with leadership experience (specifically, leading other people leaders) and P&L responsibility.
  • Broad knowledge of commercial lines and market dynamics.
  • Strong ability to manage transformation, innovation, and cross-functional initiatives.
  • Proficiency in underwriting tools, data analytics, and emerging technologies.
  • Travel up to 30% for leadership meetings, agency visits, and industry events.
