Senior Tax Strategy Advisor

Reports To:  Director of Tax Strategy

Location:  Fully remote, US-based; preference for candidates in Eastern or Pacific time zones

Compensation:  $180,000 to $250,000 base, plus annual bonus and equity opportunity

Type:  Exempt, full-time

THE OPPORTUNITY

Harrison Gray Search is partnering with one of the country’s larger fee-only, majority employee-owned RIAs to identify two Senior Tax Strategy Advisors, one supporting a Southeast client book and one supporting a West Coast client book. If you have spent a decade at a Big 4 private client services group, a top-tier family office, or an RIA that takes tax seriously, and you are ready for concierge work with sophisticated clients inside a firm where tax is built into the plan rather than bolted on, this is worth a conversation.

WHAT MAKES THIS DIFFERENT

Our client runs a fully integrated wealth model. Tax strategy is embedded next to financial planning, investment management, and estate planning, and it shapes client decisions in real time. You will not be filing returns in isolation and hoping the advisor picks up your recommendations. You will be at the table when clients make the decisions your work is meant to inform, working shoulder-to-shoulder with lead advisors, co-advisors, and planning specialists to deliver a single coordinated experience.

The client roster is the other reason to look. You will review and sign complex returns for households at $10M+ AUM, coordinate multi-entity return groups across parents, children, trusts, and closely held businesses, and act as the tax lead on the family’s most consequential planning decisions. This is craft work for people who care about the craft.

THE WORK

You will develop and implement proactive tax planning strategies for high-net-worth clients and business owners, aligning recommendations with each client’s broader financial picture. You will review tax plans and estimates, research complex tax transactions, and translate your findings into recommendations that clients can act on and advisors can implement.

You will review and sign complex individual, trust, partnership, foundation, and corporate returns, ensuring accuracy and compliance. You will coordinate multi-family, multi-entity return groups so that a family’s full financial picture is handled as one integrated package, not a stack of independent filings. You will deliver finalized return packages and act as the point of contact with the IRS and state taxing authorities when notices land or issues need to be resolved.

You will manage assigned client relationships and tax projects through the season, and you will provide subject-matter tax expertise to clients, advisors, and firm leadership. Outside of tax season, you will contribute to the firm’s thought leadership through client presentations, articles, and workshops, and you will help shape the internal policies and procedures of a maturing, fully integrated tax strategy practice.

You will also serve as a mentor. This role is a role model for the tax and planning team, and you will assist in training and developing staff, offer feedback on training programs, and step in to help colleagues when needed.

WHO YOU ARE

You are a seasoned tax professional with meaningful experience serving high-net-worth individuals, families, and business owners. You are as comfortable coordinating with a client’s outside tax counsel as you are running the analysis yourself, and you can present a nuanced recommendation to a client in language they will actually act on.

You are looking for a role where your tax work drives real client outcomes, not one where returns get thrown over a wall. You want to work with the firm’s most sophisticated clients, not the middle of the book. You are open to the idea of expanding your credentials, and you understand that in an integrated wealth environment, tax is one leg of a broader strategy.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • 10+ years of experience in comprehensive tax and financial planning, with meaningful exposure to high-net-worth clients
  • Active CPA license or Enrolled Agent (EA) designation
  • Proven client-facing experience in tax planning and advisory roles
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration; Master’s in Taxation a plus
  • CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification or Personal Financial Specialist (PFS™) credential, or willingness to earn one within your first year. This is core to the integrated model, and the firm will support you through it.
  • Familiarity with tax planning software (BNA, Planner CS, Holistiplan)
  • Familiarity with Thomson Reuters UltraTax, GoFileRoom, and Practice CS a plus
  • Fluency with tax research resources, both online and print

You should be a strong communicator, a sharp analytical thinker, and someone who genuinely enjoys helping clients see the strategy behind the numbers. You should be collaborative by nature. This is not a role for someone who wants to sit in a corner with returns.

WHAT YOU GET

  • Base salary of $180,000 to $250,000, commensurate with experience
  • Annual team-based incentive bonus opportunity
  • Equity ownership opportunity following demonstrated performance in the role. This is a majority employee-owned firm, and long-term equity is a real component of total compensation for people who stay and perform.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage effective day one
  • HSA/FSA options, company-paid life, AD&D, and disability
  • 401(k) with company match (Roth and Traditional)
  • Generous PTO, at least 10 paid holidays, parental leave, and summer hours
  • Fully remote work environment

THE TWO OPENINGS

Two Senior Tax Strategy Advisors will be hired: one supporting the Southeast client book and one supporting the West Coast client book. Both roles are remote-first and location-flexible for the right candidate. Preference is for candidates in Eastern or Pacific time zones to align with client meeting rhythms, but exceptional candidates elsewhere will be considered.
