Underwriter, Property - Atlanta, GA
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Property Underwriter to join our Atlanta, GA office. In this role, you will evaluate commercial property risks, develop pricing strategies, and build strong relationships with agents and brokers to drive profitable business growth. The ideal candidate combines strong technical underwriting abilities with business development skills and a customer-focused approach.
Key Responsibilities
Risk Assessment & Underwriting
* Evaluate commercial property submissions to determine risk acceptability, pricing, and appropriate terms and conditions
* Analyze property exposures including building construction, occupancy, protection, and external exposure (COPE)
* Assess property values, loss history, and hazard exposure to determine appropriate coverage options
* Review property inspections, engineering reports, and loss control recommendations
* Determine appropriate deductibles, limits, exclusions, and endorsements for each risk
* Make sound underwriting decisions that balance growth objectives with profitability requirements
Business Development
* Develop and maintain productive relationships with agents and brokers in the Atlanta market
* Conduct in-person meetings and property site visits with agents and insureds
* Respond promptly to submission requests and provide timely quotes
* Identify cross-selling opportunities across multiple lines of business
* Generate new business opportunities through targeted marketing efforts
* Participate in industry events and networking functions to enhance market presence
Portfolio Management
* Monitor and analyze book performance metrics including loss ratio, retention, and growth
* Identify trends and implement strategies to improve portfolio profitability
* Manage renewal book to maintain strong retention of profitable accounts
* Implement corrective actions for underperforming segments of the book
* Work with actuarial and product teams to refine pricing models and underwriting guidelines
Technical Expertise
* Maintain current knowledge of property insurance markets, coverages, and industry trends
* Stay informed about catastrophe exposures and aggregation management
* Apply technical knowledge of construction types, protection systems, and property valuation
* Understand reinsurance considerations in property underwriting decisions
* Keep current on emerging property risks and mitigation strategies
Qualifications
Education & Experience
* Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Risk Management, or related field
* 3+ years of commercial property underwriting experience
* Strong understanding of commercial property coverages and forms
* Experience working with agents and brokers in the Southeast region preferred
* Knowledge of local building codes and regional catastrophe exposures
Technical Knowledge
* Proficiency in property risk assessment and COPE analysis
* Understanding of property valuation methods and replacement cost calculations
* Knowledge of fire protection systems and loss control measures
* Familiarity with catastrophe modeling and exposure management
* Ability to interpret insurance policy language and coverage implications
