Our client, a top, fast-growing Canadian accounting firm, is expanding their team and is looking for a Sr. Tax Manager with Agriculture experience to join their growing tax practice. This position offers the opportunity to work closely with partners and provide specialized tax advisory services to clients within the agricultural sector. The successful candidate will manage complex engagements, develop tax planning strategies, and build strong relationships with agricultural business owners.
The Tax Manager will play a key role within the firm’s tax practice, focusing on tax planning, compliance, and advisory services for agricultural clients. Reporting directly to senior leadership, this role will lead client engagements involving owner-managed farms, agricultural cooperatives, and agribusiness organizations. The successful candidate will provide strategic tax guidance related to agricultural operations, succession planning, and tax-efficient structuring while managing a portfolio of clients and mentoring junior professionals.
Key Responsibilities
- Work closely with partners to identify tax issues and planning opportunities for owner-managed agricultural businesses.
- Prepare and review federal and provincial income tax returns for individuals, corporations, and exempt organizations within the agricultural sector.
- Manage complex personal and corporate tax matters, including GST/HST considerations relevant to agricultural operations.
- Provide guidance on specialized agricultural tax matters such as farm losses, farmland sales, succession planning, and intergenerational farm transfers.
- Conduct technical tax research and develop strategic planning recommendations for clients.
- Support assurance teams with tax and GST/HST compliance matters where required.
- Supervise and review Canadian personal and corporate tax returns.
- Lead and mentor team members on corporate restructuring projects, including those involving family-owned farms and agribusinesses.
- Provide estate and succession planning support for high-net-worth agricultural clients.
- Manage a portfolio of clients, acting as the primary point of contact for both internal and external stakeholders.
- Oversee engagement performance, including budgets, billing, and collections.
- Develop strong relationships with clients by delivering strategic tax insights and advisory services.
- Participate in business development initiatives and industry-focused networking activities.
- Coach and mentor junior team members while supporting their professional development.
- Identify tax consulting opportunities and contribute to the growth of the firm’s agricultural tax practice.
Required Qualifications
- Professional accounting designation (CPA or equivalent)
- Experience completing agricultural tax engagements
- Experience advising owner-managed businesses and complex tax engagements
- Strong technical tax background within a public practice environment
- Additional post-designation experience focused on tax compliance and planning
- Proficiency with tax software, Caseware, Excel, and Word
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent organizational and time management abilities with the capacity to manage multiple priorities
