Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly skilled Mainframe Engineer. This role is critical for managing, maintaining, and optimizing the organization's IBM z/OS mainframe systems, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and supporting disaster recovery readiness. As the subject matter expert, the Mainframe Systems Engineer will handle complex technical issues, mentor junior team members, and provide leadership in maintaining system availability and performance.
Key Responsibilities:
System Maintenance and Support:
- Perform installation, maintenance, and upgrades for system and ISV software.
- Manage and support virtual tape backup systems and libraries.
- Provide troubleshooting, training, and technical support for all organizational projects.
Technical Escalation:
- Resolve complex technical issues escalated from other support tiers.
- Communicate effectively and courteously with users to ensure satisfactory resolutions.
Leadership and Mentorship:
- Act as a subject matter expert for mainframe systems, mentoring and coaching less experienced team members.
- Serve as a backup to the manager when necessary.
Disaster Recovery Readiness:
- Configure and maintain disaster recovery mainframe sites, including immutable storage systems.
- Participate in and execute tasks during disaster recovery exercises.
Compliance and Industry Standards:
- Ensure compliance with server, network, security, and engineering standards.
- Stay updated on emerging trends and industry best practices.
Must-Haves:
Technical Expertise:
- Extensive experience with IBM z/OS mainframe and related tools/products, including:
- LPAR configuration, MQ Series, DB2, COBOL, JCL, VSAM, CICS, and ISV software.
- IBM file structures (HFS, ZFS, and PDS), TSO, and DFSMS.
- Proficiency with IBM DS89xx disk subsystems, including day-to-day operations, replication, flash copies, and immutable staging using tools like Copy Service Manager (CSM).
- Knowledge of networking technologies supporting mainframes (Ethernet, FICON).
- Expertise in z/OS virtualization, including zLinux installation and maintenance.
- Experience with backup solutions and strategies.

- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Proven ability to mentor and develop team members.
- Effective time management and prioritization in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with virtual tape systems, including Luminex.
- Familiarity with AIX operating systems.
- Knowledge of LAN/WAN/Firewall/VPN technologies.
- Experience with storage area networks (SANs) and disaster recovery strategies.
