Certified Nurse Midwife

Birth is one of the few moments that permanently changes a family. This role exists so people enter that moment informed, respected, and clinically safe—and leave it with a plan they can live with. You will own the full arc of midwifery care: pregnancy, labor, birth, postpartum, and the decisions that sit between them. Success is measured in healthy outcomes, calm rooms, and families who know exactly what happened and why.

Performance Objectives

  • Deliver evidence-based prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, and gynecologic care that meets or exceeds unit benchmarks for term birth, cesarean, and maternal morbidity.
  • Lead labor management so patients progress safely, interventions are justified, and unexpected events are recognized and escalated without delay.
  • Conduct births and immediate newborn assessment within your scope, coordinating seamlessly with nursing, obstetrics, anesthesia, and pediatrics.
  • Close every episode with a documented plan—contraception, lactation, warning signs, and follow-up—so no patient leaves unclear on next steps.
  • Reduce preventable complications by applying protocols for hemorrhage, hypertension, shoulder dystocia, and fetal distress with the same discipline on night shift as on day shift.
  • Build trust across diverse patients and families through shared decision-making, plain language, and culturally respectful care.
  • Strengthen the practice by precepting learners, contributing to quality review, and tightening handoffs that currently create risk.

Environment & Resources

You will practice in a collaborative obstetric team with 24-hour physician backup, dedicated labor nurses, and access to operating rooms, neonatal support, and standard fetal monitoring. Charting, order entry, and quality dashboards live in the hospital EHR. You report to the midwifery or women’s health clinical lead and practice under a collaborative agreement aligned to state scope. Call is shared; orientation includes unit protocols, simulation, and a named preceptor until you are independently credentialed.

Essential Qualifications

  • Active CNM certification (AMCB) and current RN license, with eligibility for state advanced-practice authorization and DEA as required for the practice.
  • Demonstrated independent management of low-risk labor and birth, plus sound judgment on when to consult or transfer.
  • Current NRP and BLS; ACLS preferred where the unit requires it.
  • Comfortable full-scope practice: antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and well-woman or gynecologic care.
  • Clear documentation and calm communication under time pressure, including with patients who disagree with a recommendation.
  • Willingness to take shared call and to precept students or new graduates.

Why This Role

  • Full-scope midwifery, not a narrowed clinic-only assignment.
  • Physician collaboration that is real backup, not a bottleneck.
  • Quality work that is visible: your outcomes and handoffs are reviewed, not buried.
  • A team that treats birth as clinical work and as a defining family event.

If you want your next shift to be judged by the births you made safer—not by a title on a badge—apply with your certification, license status, and a short note on the outcome you are most proud of managing.
