Maternal Fetal Medicine Physician

High-risk pregnancy is decided in the details: the scan that changes the plan, the consult that keeps a mother stable, the handoff that a delivery team can actually use. In this role you own those moments. You turn complex maternal and fetal findings into a clear course of care so obstetric partners, neonatology, and families act on the same plan—and two patients leave safer than they arrived.

Performance Objectives

  • Lead co-management of medically complex pregnancies—preeclampsia, diabetes, cardiac and other high-risk conditions—so severe morbidity on your panel stays at or below service benchmarks.
  • Deliver timely MFM consults with a written plan the referring obstetrician can execute without rework or delayed decisions.
  • Perform and interpret detailed fetal ultrasound and indicated diagnostic procedures at accuracy and turnaround that meet departmental standards.
  • Build multidisciplinary plans for fetal anomalies before delivery, aligning imaging, genetics, neonatology, and family counseling on one timeline.
  • Close every visit with a next decision, an owner, and a date so patients and partners are not left waiting on unanswered questions.
  • Bring case-review findings into protocol changes within the quarter they are identified, and keep those changes in daily practice.
  • Coach residents, sonographers, or advanced practice clinicians so consult quality holds when you are off service.

Environment & Resources

You report to the MFM medical director or women’s-services physician leader and practice inside a hospital-based perinatal team: obstetric hospitalists, neonatology, obstetric anesthesia, genetic counselors, and dedicated sonographers. Imaging suites, fetal monitoring, and the shared EMR are in place; call is distributed across the MFM group. You shape clinical pathways; capital and staffing budgets sit with service leadership.

Essential Qualifications

  • MD or DO, completed OB/GYN residency and Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellowship, board-certified or board-eligible.
  • Eligible for unrestricted state licensure and hospital privileges, including procedural privileges you will actually use.
  • Independent skill in detailed fetal ultrasound and in the diagnostic procedures your panel requires.
  • A record of co-managing high-risk pregnancies with documented participation in quality or outcomes review.
  • Clear, calm counseling for families facing uncertain fetal or maternal prognoses.

Role Selling Points

  • Caseload weighted to true high-risk consults, not routine prenatal volume.
  • Shared MFM coverage so complex cases have a second set of eyes and call is sustainable.
  • A working perinatal team—genetics, neonatology, anesthesia—already at the table for anomaly and delivery planning.
  • Authority to change protocols when case review shows they fail patients, not only to document the gap.

Call to Action

If you want your next chapter measured by safer births, not by titles, apply with your CV and a brief note on one complex case you owned from consult through delivery plan.
