Urgent Care Physician

People walk in with pain, fever, injury, and a short window to get an answer. This role exists to resolve acute problems the same day—safely, clearly, and without sending work that belongs here to the emergency department. The physician who succeeds keeps the room moving while every disposition is still one they would defend.

Performance Objectives

  • Evaluate and treat the full range of acute, non-emergent illness and injury so most patients leave with a working diagnosis, treatment, and a plan they can follow.
  • Complete common procedures—laceration repair, incision and drainage, splinting, foreign-body removal, and point-of-care testing—with few complications and few unplanned returns.
  • Separate what can be managed on site from what cannot, transferring time-sensitive conditions without delay and avoiding unnecessary emergency referrals.
  • Close the chart the same shift so coding, follow-up, and handoffs are complete and defensible.
  • Shorten door-to-disposition time without trading away diagnostic accuracy or patient understanding.
  • Align nurses, advanced practice clinicians, and imaging so orders, results, and discharge instructions do not stall.
  • Match antibiotics, imaging, and controlled substances to the problem in front of you, not to habit or pressure from the queue.

Environment & Resources

You practice in a high-volume urgent care clinic with nursing and medical-assistant support, on-site basic imaging and lab, and an electronic health record built for same-day documentation. A medical director is available for complex cases. Shifts are scheduled so acute decisions are shared across a clinical team, not carried alone after hours. Transfer pathways and standing protocols cover conditions outside urgent care scope.

Essential Qualifications

  • MD or DO with an active, unrestricted license in the state of practice and a current DEA registration.
  • Board certification or eligibility in family medicine, emergency medicine, or internal medicine, or a comparable record of independent urgent care practice.
  • Current ACLS and PALS, or equivalent pediatric resuscitation competency if the site treats children.
  • Hands-on record of managing lacerations, musculoskeletal injury, and common infections without on-site specialty backup.
  • Reliable same-shift EHR documentation and sound judgment on when to treat, observe, or transfer.
  • Ability to obtain required privileges and professional liability coverage for the site.

Role Selling Points

  • Shift work with a defined end—no inpatient census and no longitudinal panel.
  • Acute medicine across ages and problems: procedures, infections, injuries, and same-day decisions.
  • A staffed clinic so physician time goes to diagnosis and disposition, not room turnover.
  • Protocols and a clear transfer path when a case exceeds what urgent care should hold.

If you want your judgment to matter in the hour it is needed, apply with your CV and a brief note on the urgent or emergency work you have already owned.
