Hematology/Oncology Nurse Practitioner

Patients with cancer and serious blood disorders need a clinician who can turn a complex plan into a safe next step. In this role, you will own day-to-day specialty care so treatment starts on time, toxicities are caught early, and families leave knowing what to watch for and when to call. Your work will be judged by continuity, fewer avoidable delays, and clearer decisions—not by how many notes you close.

Performance Objectives

  • Manage a defined panel of hematology and oncology patients so new, treatment-change, and acute visits produce a documented plan before therapy proceeds.
  • Select, order, and adjust systemic therapy and supportive care with the attending physician, matching regimen, dose, and schedule to disease status, goals of care, and current evidence.
  • Prevent unplanned admissions by recognizing and treating cytopenias, infection risk, infusion reactions, and other treatment toxicities at the earliest safe point.
  • Keep cycles on schedule by closing gaps in labs, imaging, pathology, prior authorization, and infusion readiness before the planned start date.
  • Lead patient and family education so consent, adherence, symptom reporting, and red-flag instructions are confirmed before each treatment cycle.
  • Coordinate with pharmacy, infusion nursing, navigation, and social work to remove clinical and access barriers that would otherwise delay care.
  • Advance survivorship, palliative, and hospice transitions with documented goals, symptom burden, and a clear handoff.

Environment & Resources

You will practice alongside hematologists/oncologists, infusion nurses, pharmacists, and navigators, with tumor board and specialty referral pathways available for complex cases. Standard tools include the EHR, chemotherapy order sets, toxicity protocols, and clinical decision support. You will report to the physician lead or medical director and have authority to prescribe and manage within collaborative practice and state scope.

Essential Qualifications

  • Active nurse practitioner license and national certification appropriate to the patient population, with prescriptive authority in the practice state.
  • At least two years of hematology/oncology or acute adult oncology experience managing systemic therapy, not observation alone.
  • Demonstrated competency in chemotherapy/immunotherapy ordering or administration oversight and in managing neutropenic fever, cytopenias, and treatment-related toxicity.
  • Ability to independently complete new-patient assessments, staging reviews, and treatment-change visits that an attending can trust.
  • Working command of oncology guidelines, staging, and goals-of-care conversations with patients and families.
  • Eligibility for required collaborative agreements, DEA registration, and institutional credentialing.

Role Selling Points

  • True specialty practice: you manage disease and treatment, not a general urgent-care queue with an oncology label.
  • Physician partnership on regimen selection, with room to practice at the top of NP scope.
  • A team built for cycle integrity—pharmacy, infusion, and navigation are part of the daily workflow.
  • Visible impact on delays, toxicity, and patient understanding, reviewed as clinical outcomes rather than volume alone.

Call to Action

If you can keep complex treatment safe, timely, and understandable, apply with a resume that shows the panels, regimens, and outcomes you have owned.
