Surgical Oncologist
Cancer surgery is a promise: the right operation, at the right time, with a plan that holds after the incision closes. In this role you will own that promise—leading complex resections, aligning the care team, and turning staging into treatment patients can start without delay. Success is measured in clear margins, safe recovery, and plans patients understand and complete.
Performance Objectives
- Build a surgical oncology practice that meets or exceeds benchmark rates for margin status, major complications, and unplanned readmission.
- Cut time from complete staging to definitive surgery by running a predictable clinic, OR, and clearance pathway.
- Chair or co-lead tumor board so every complex case leaves with a documented, evidence-based plan and a named owner.
- Convert referring physicians into a reliable network by returning timely consults and shared follow-up plans.
- Standardize perioperative pathways that shorten length of stay without raising return-to-OR or infection rates.
- Teach residents, advanced practice providers, and OR teams the cases, indications, and handoffs that keep care consistent.
- Review outcomes each quarter and retire or revise any pathway that fails patients.
Environment & Resources
You will practice inside a multidisciplinary cancer program and report to the surgical or cancer service-line leader. Expect dedicated clinic and OR block, nurse navigation, pathology and genetics access, a tumor registry, and advanced-practice support. Quality data and pathway time are part of the job, not after-hours extras. Compensation reflects both surgical productivity and outcome performance.
Essential Qualifications
- MD or DO with board certification or eligibility in general surgery and completion of an accredited surgical oncology fellowship.
- Independent experience with complex oncologic resections and multidisciplinary treatment planning.
- Current license eligibility and a record that supports hospital privileging.
- Demonstrated use of outcomes data to change practice, not only to report it.
- Clear communication with patients facing high-stakes decisions and with referring clinicians.
Role Selling Points
- Authority over your schedule, case mix, and pathway design—not a volume-only queue.
- A real cancer team: navigation, tumor board, and specialty partners already in the workflow.
- Quality metrics that count in how success and pay are judged.
- A placement built as a long-term match, with a recruiter who stays involved through start.
