Colorectal Surgeon
Patients facing complex colorectal disease need a surgeon who turns an uncertain diagnosis into a clear plan, a safe operation, and a recovery they can live with. In this role you will own care for colon, rectal, and anal conditions—from cancer and inflammatory bowel disease to pelvic floor and anorectal disorders—and be accountable for survival, function, and trust. Your judgment will define how this service operates, grows, and is measured.
Performance Objectives
- Establish a reliable colorectal practice that meets agreed access, volume, and quality targets within the first year.
- Deliver evidence-based care for colorectal cancer, IBD, and benign anorectal disease, with complications, leaks, and readmissions at or better than national benchmarks.
- Complete cancer cases on pathway timelines and improve sphincter preservation and stoma-free outcomes where clinically appropriate.
- Lead multidisciplinary planning with gastroenterology, oncology, radiology, and pathology so every complex case has a documented shared plan.
- Shorten length of stay and reduce unplanned returns to the operating room by standardizing enhanced-recovery pathways.
- Coach residents, advanced practice providers, and operating-room teams so readiness, documentation, and handoffs meet service standards.
- Grow appropriate referrals and patient-experience scores while reporting outcomes openly.
Environment & Resources
You will practice in a hospital-based surgical service with dedicated operating-room block time, endoscopy access, and a multidisciplinary gastrointestinal cancer program. Support includes specialty-trained nursing, advanced practice providers, patient navigators, and a quality analyst. You will report to the chief of surgery or service medical director and help set staffing and capital priorities for the service.
Essential Qualifications
- MD or DO, an accredited general surgery residency, and a colorectal surgery fellowship.
- Board certification or active eligibility in colon and rectal surgery, plus an unrestricted license or eligibility in the practice state.
- Independent experience across open, laparoscopic, and robotic colorectal procedures.
- A record of tumor-board participation and guideline-concordant cancer care with reviewed outcomes.
- Ability to secure privileges and meet call, credentialing, and documentation standards.
Why This Role
- Accountability for outcomes, with authority to design pathways—not only a case list.
- An established gastroenterology, oncology, and pelvic-floor network.
- Protected time and analytic support for quality improvement and teaching.
- Room to grow minimally invasive and robotic volume with dedicated block time.
