Radiation Oncologist

Patients facing cancer need a physician who can turn complex imaging, staging, and evidence into a treatment plan they can trust. In this role, you will own the radiation course from first consult through follow-up, balancing tumor control, toxicity, and the life the patient is trying to keep. Your judgment will shape multidisciplinary decisions, treatment quality, and whether care feels precise rather than impersonal.

Performance Objectives

  • Complete timely new-patient consultations and produce clear, evidence-based treatment recommendations patients and referring physicians can act on.
  • Design and approve radiation plans—including advanced techniques when indicated—that meet target coverage, organ-at-risk constraints, and peer-review standards.
  • Lead on-treatment management so acute toxicity is anticipated, documented, and addressed before it interrupts care.
  • Drive multidisciplinary case review and close the loop with surgery, medical oncology, radiology, and primary teams on staging, intent, and sequencing.
  • Supervise simulation, delivery, and plan changes so treatment matches the approved intent and deviations are caught early.
  • Build follow-up pathways that track disease control, late effects, and survivorship needs, and feed findings back into practice improvement.
  • Teach residents, therapists, or advanced-practice partners so clinical standards hold when you are not in the room.

Environment & Resources

You will practice within a cancer program supported by medical physics, dosimetry, radiation therapy, nursing, and navigation. Modern linear accelerators, CT simulation, and a dedicated treatment-planning system are in place, with medical physics partnership for quality assurance. You will report to the physician leadership of the radiation oncology service and collaborate daily with tumor-site teams. Administrative support covers scheduling, prior authorization coordination, and documentation so clinical time stays on patients and plans.

Essential Qualifications

  • MD or DO with completion of an ACGME-accredited radiation oncology residency.
  • Board certification or active board eligibility in radiation oncology, plus eligibility for unrestricted state licensure.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently contour, evaluate, and approve IMRT and stereotactic plans against published constraints.
  • Track record of multidisciplinary cancer care, including clear communication with patients facing curative and palliative intent.
  • Working knowledge of radiation safety, peer review, and incident reporting expectations.
  • Comfort using an oncology EMR and treatment-planning workflow without relying on others to interpret the plan.

Role Selling Points

  • Physician-led ownership of the full radiation episode, not a narrow contouring assignment.
  • Physics, dosimetry, and therapy partners already embedded in daily plan review.
  • Case mix that includes both definitive and palliative care, with room to deepen a disease-site focus.
  • A practice that measures success by plan quality, timely starts, and patient understanding—not volume alone.
