Gastroenterology Nurse Practitioner
Patients with complex digestive disease need a clinician who can move from first concern to a clear plan without losing the person in the protocol. In this role, you will own a panel of gastroenterology patients, close the gap between symptoms and diagnosis, and make every visit count toward better comfort, function, and follow-through. Your judgment will expand access to specialty GI care and keep higher-risk patients on a safe, timely path.
Performance Objectives
- Complete independent GI evaluations and build evidence-based plans for reflux, IBD, liver disease, and functional disorders that reduce avoidable return visits.
- Order, interpret, and act on labs, imaging, and procedure results so abnormal findings are addressed within agreed turnaround times.
- Adjust therapy for chronic GI conditions to improve symptom control and medication adherence at each review cycle.
- Prepare patients for endoscopy and related procedures, complete pre-procedure clearance, and close post-procedure follow-up so complications are caught early.
- Partner with gastroenterologists on complex cases, escalating promptly and documenting decisions that support continuity and quality measures.
- Teach patients and families in plain language so diet changes, medications, and red-flag symptoms are understood before they leave.
- Protect clinic flow by finishing accurate notes the same day and supporting coding that reflects the care delivered.
Environment and Resources
You will practice with gastroenterologists, nurses, and medical assistants in an outpatient specialty setting that coordinates procedures. The role includes established clinical protocols, an EHR with GI templates, scheduled new and follow-up time, and the diagnostic and referral resources the service already uses. You will report to practice medical leadership and have mentoring from experienced GI clinicians.
Essential Qualifications
- Active nurse practitioner license and national certification, with prescriptive authority in the state of practice.
- Graduate NP preparation and clinical experience in gastroenterology, internal medicine, or a closely related adult specialty.
- Proven ability to independently assess, diagnose, and manage common and complex GI conditions.
- Working command of EHR documentation, results follow-up, and procedure-related workflows.
- Clear communication with patients who are anxious, newly diagnosed, or living with long-term disease.
- Current BLS, plus DEA registration or eligibility to obtain it where required.
Why This Role
- Ownership of patient outcomes, not a narrow task list.
- Direct partnership with GI physicians on cases that require judgment.
- A specialty setting where your recommendations can change the plan the same day.
- Room to deepen chronic-disease management and procedure-adjacent skills.
- A placement built for a lasting fit between you and the clinical team.
