Hepatologist

Patients with complex liver disease need a physician who turns ambiguous labs, imaging, and symptoms into a plan they can trust—and who stays with them through evaluation, recovery, or long-term control. This role owns clinical outcomes for a high-acuity hepatology practice: accurate diagnosis, timely intervention, and coordinated care that cuts avoidable admissions and improves survival and quality of life. Your judgment will define how the service performs, not only how a single visit goes.

Performance Objectives

  • Diagnose and manage acute and chronic liver disease—including cirrhosis, viral hepatitis, MASLD, and autoimmune and cholestatic disease—so guideline-concordant treatment starts within agreed clinic timelines.
  • Lead inpatient hepatology consults and shorten time-to-recommendation for decompensated cirrhosis, acute liver injury, and transplant-related questions.
  • Complete transplant and post-transplant assessments that selection teams can act on without rework.
  • Run an outpatient panel with reliable access: new-patient slots, follow-up intervals, and closed gaps in vaccination, variceal screening, and HCC surveillance.
  • Reduce preventable readmissions by standardizing pathways for ascites, hepatic encephalopathy, and GI bleeding with hospital medicine and GI.
  • Improve service metrics you are accountable for—length of stay, surveillance rates, mortality review findings, and patient experience—and teach residents or APPs to sustain those gains.

Environment & Resources

You will practice in a multidisciplinary liver program with GI, transplant surgery, interventional radiology, pathology, nutrition, pharmacy, and care coordination, plus endoscopy and advanced imaging. Support includes APP or nursing coverage, an EMR with liver order sets, and protected time for clinic, consults, and quality work. You report to the gastroenterology/hepatology medical director or service chief. Clinic template and call are defined before you start.

Essential Qualifications

  • MD or DO with board certification or eligibility in gastroenterology and fellowship training in transplant hepatology, or equivalent advanced liver practice.
  • Active or obtainable medical license and DEA registration, and eligibility for hospital and transplant-program privileges.
  • Proven care of decompensated cirrhosis, viral hepatitis, and pre- and post-transplant patients.
  • Ability to lead consults, multidisciplinary conferences, and decisions with seriously ill patients and families.
  • Habit of documentation and quality reporting that improves team results, not only personal volume.

Role Selling Points

  • A dedicated liver service, not a general GI add-on, with hepatology-specific panel and metrics.
  • Transplant collaboration without carrying the entire program alone.
  • APPs, coordinators, and pathways so your time goes to decisions, not chasing results.
  • Success measured by access, surveillance, and fewer preventable crises.

If you want your judgment to change the course of liver disease—not just fill a schedule—apply with a CV and a short note on the outcomes you are ready to own.
