Hospitalist Physician Assistant

Hospital medicine moves fast, and patients do not wait for a perfect handoff. In this role you own the inpatient arc: admit with clarity, manage the course with discipline, and discharge with a plan that holds. Your work shortens length of stay, catches deterioration early, and gives attending physicians and bedside teams a partner they can trust at 2 a.m. as much as at noon.

Performance Objectives

  • Admit and manage a defined panel of adult inpatients, completing history, exam, and initial orders within the unit’s target window so care starts before the next shift change.
  • Drive daily progress by updating assessments, adjusting therapy, and documenting a clear plan that attending physicians can co-sign without rework.
  • Escalate instability early—sepsis, respiratory failure, acute decompensation—using established criteria so critical-care and rapid-response teams are activated before crisis.
  • Lead multidisciplinary rounds with nursing, case management, and pharmacy, resolving barriers that delay tests, procedures, or safe discharge.
  • Produce discharge summaries and follow-up instructions that reduce bounce-backs, with medication reconciliation complete before the patient leaves the floor.
  • Close the loop on results and consults the same day they return, so no critical finding sits unread overnight.
  • Coach newer clinicians on hospital workflow and documentation standards, raising team throughput without sacrificing safety.

Environment & Resources

  • You practice on an inpatient medicine service alongside hospitalist physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and case managers, with 24/7 attending backup.
  • Tools include the hospital EHR, order sets, evidence-based protocols, and secure messaging for consults and results.
  • You report to the hospitalist medical director (or designated lead APP) and participate in quality reviews tied to length of stay, readmissions, and documentation accuracy.
  • Shift structure, census targets, and procedural scope are defined in the practice agreement and state regulations—not left to guesswork.

Essential Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited PA program and current NCCPA certification, with an active state license (or eligibility) and DEA as required for inpatient prescribing.
  • Demonstrated inpatient adult medicine experience—hospitalist, internal medicine, or equivalent—managing common medical admissions independently within a collaborative agreement.
  • Proven ability to prioritize a full census, document to billing and quality standards, and hand off without gaps.
  • Comfort recognizing and escalating critical illness, including sepsis and acute respiratory failure, using hospital protocols.
  • Clear communication with physicians, nurses, patients, and families under time pressure.
  • Current BLS and ACLS.

Role Selling Points

  • Real ownership of the inpatient course, not a perpetual student role—attending partnership with defined autonomy.
  • A service built around measurable outcomes: safer discharges, cleaner handoffs, fewer missed results.
  • Structured backup and protocols so high-acuity decisions are supported, not solitary.
  • A schedule and census model designed for sustainable hospitalist practice, not open-ended coverage.
