Position Overview: As a SALT Manager or Senior SALT Manager, you will take on a leadership role within our state and local tax practice, working closely with clients to navigate the complex and ever-changing landscape of multistate taxation while managing a team of SALT professionals. Key Responsibilities:
- Manage and oversee a portfolio of multistate clients, ensuring the delivery of timely, accurate SALT compliance and advisory services
- Lead state income/franchise tax, sales and use tax, property tax, and credits/incentives projects for clients across multiple industries (Real Estate, Construction, Tech, Retail, Professional Services, Manufacturing, etc.)
- Manage nexus studies, voluntary disclosure agreements, and audit defense matters
- Oversee apportionment analysis, combined reporting reviews, and tax attribute planning
- Lead a team of SALT professionals, providing mentorship, training, and technical guidance
- Review complex multistate tax returns and estimated tax calculations
- Identify tax planning opportunities including nexus mitigation, apportionment optimization, and credit/incentive strategies
- Stay current on state tax law changes, legislative developments, and case law across multiple jurisdictions
- Represent clients in state audits and administrative appeals
- Build and maintain strong client relationships and serve as a trusted SALT advisor
- Collaborate with partners and senior management to develop SALT practice growth strategies
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MST strongly preferred)
- 7+ years of experience in state and local taxation, with at least 5 years in a managerial or senior role
- Deep technical knowledge of multistate income/franchise tax, sales and use tax, property tax, and nexus principles
- Experience with state tax compliance, planning, controversy, and credits/incentives
- Strong understanding of apportionment methodologies, combined reporting, and P.L. 86-272
- Excellent communication and leadership skills with ability to explain complex SALT issues clearly
- Ability to manage multiple priorities across various jurisdictions in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to thrive in a remote-first, collaborative team setting
- Experience with SALT software platforms (CCH Axcess, OneSource, Vertex, etc.) a plus
