Environmental Engineer

Overview

A leading industrial organization is seeking an experienced Environmental Engineer to support operations within a highly regulated facility environment. This role is responsible for ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and leading air quality and emissions management initiatives across multiple sites. This role will be based in the South Bay Area of Los Angels, CA.


This position offers the opportunity to contribute to critical environmental programs tied to sustainability, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence within complex industrial operations.


Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary resource for environmental compliance related to air quality, emissions, water, waste, and remediation requirements
  • Lead and manage environmental permitting activities, including preparation, submission, tracking, and closeout of permits associated with maintenance and capital projects
  • Interpret and apply local, state, and federal environmental regulations; advise internal stakeholders on regulatory impacts and changes
  • Act as a subject matter expert on air emissions, including permitting, compliance strategy, and regulatory reporting
  • Develop and execute permitting strategies for facility upgrades, modifications, and expansion efforts
  • Interface directly with regulatory agencies and participate in compliance discussions, audits, negotiations, and enforcement matters
  • Manage external consultants supporting emissions testing, modeling, permitting, and environmental analysis efforts
  • Develop scopes of work and assist in selection of environmental consultants and contractors
  • Oversee implementation of annual air emissions control programs and site-specific environmental procedures
  • Maintain ownership of Risk Management Plan (RMP) programs and ensure compliance with all applicable standards
  • Support environmental audits (internal and external) and ensure readiness for regulatory inspections
  • Monitor and maintain emissions data, including calculation, validation, and reporting of environmental metrics
  • Ensure proper documentation and recordkeeping in compliance management systems
  • Prepare and deliver reports to internal leadership, regulatory bodies, and external stakeholders
  • Participate in Management of Change (MOC) processes to evaluate environmental impacts of operational changes
  • Assist in development of annual compliance plans, budgets, and environmental performance initiatives
  • Provide training and guidance to site personnel on environmental requirements and best practices
  • Support procurement activities including proposal requests and purchase order coordination
  • Represent the organization in community and industry forums as needed


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, or related field (required)
  • 7–10+ years of experience in environmental compliance within a regulated industrial or plant environment
  • Strong expertise in air quality regulations, emissions permitting, and compliance reporting
  • In-depth knowledge of federal operating permits and environmental regulatory frameworks
  • Experience working with regulatory agencies at local, state, and federal levels
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and environmental data tracking/reporting systems
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze data and track key performance indicators (KPIs)
  • Must be eligible to obtain a TWIC card


Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional certifications such as CHMM or REM
  • Advanced degree in a related technical discipline
  • Prior experience working with environmental regulatory agencies in California or similarly stringent jurisdictions


Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This role operates in both office and field environments, including active industrial sites. Conditions may include exposure to outdoor weather, elevated structures, confined spaces, and industrial equipment.

  • Ability to climb ladders and access elevated structures (up to ~50 feet)
  • Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Use of required personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Exposure to varying temperatures and industrial conditions

Travel may be required on an as-needed basis.
