The Role:

Our client is looking for a strategic, execution-driven Chief Financial Officer with deep project financing experience—ideally within renewable energy, hydrogen, clean tech, utilities, infrastructure, or adjacent capital-intensive sectors.

You will oversee all aspects of corporate finance, project capital structuring, investor relations, risk, forecasting, and financial operations for a fast-scaling energy company. You will be a key executive partner in evaluating new projects, negotiating financing instruments, and building long-term financial resilience. The CFO will travel regularly throughout North America to project locations and partner sites; a genuine enjoyment of travel is important for long-term success in this role.

You are a seasoned finance leader who has:

  • Successfully structured and closed large-scale project financing deals (debt, equity, blended, government funding, and alternative structures).
  • Led financial strategy for organizations with complex capital stacks and multi-year development cycles.
  • Comfort operating in early-growth environments while maintaining discipline and clarity in financial operations.
  • Strong fluency in the economics of energy infrastructure: project feasibility, IRR, NPV, payback models, CAPEX/OPEX modelling, government incentives, and risk mitigation.
  • A calm, steady executive presence with the ability to communicate clearly to technical, commercial, and board stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Strategic Financial Leadership

  • Own our client’s long-term financial strategy, forecasting, and capital planning.
  • Partner with the CEO, COO, and project teams to evaluate new energy projects and determine financial viability.
  • Build and lead a high-performing finance team as the company grows.

2. Project Financing & Capital Structuring

  • Build financial models for large-scale hydrogen/energy projects and present scenarios to executive leadership and the board.

3. Corporate Finance & Treasury

  • Optimize capital structure, liquidity, and cash flow as the project pipeline expands.
  • Manage banking relationships, investor reporting, and financial risk.
  • Oversee working capital, financial controls, insurance, and audit processes.

4. Board & Investor Relations

  • Prepare board packages, financial roadmaps, and strategic updates.
  • Support capital raising (equity or debt) and maintain investor confidence through consistent communication.

5. Financial Operations & Governance

  • Build scalable processes, systems, and KPIs across finance, accounting, and reporting.
  • Oversee compliance with BC, Canadian, and sector-specific regulatory requirements.
  • Establish processes that support rapid company growth while ensuring accuracy and control.

Experience We’re Looking For:

Must-Have:

  • 12–20+ years progressive financial leadership, including at least 5 years in a CFO, VP Finance, or equivalent role.
  • Extensive experience in project financing within energy, infrastructure, utilities, renewables, hydrogen, industrials, or capital-intensive technology.
  • Proven track record raising or structuring $50M–$500M+ project capital packages.
  • Advanced financial modelling skills tailored to infrastructure and long-term assets.
  • Experience navigating government funding, grants, and incentives.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CPA, CFA, MBA, or equivalent designation.
  • Experience scaling a growth-stage or mid-market clean technology company.
  • Experience with engineering-driven businesses or EPC project structures.
  • Familiarity with hydrogen production, storage, distribution, or alternative energy systems.
