About Our Client:
Our client develops, finances, and deploys hydrogen and low-carbon energy projects across Western Canada. They operate at the intersection of advanced clean-energy technology, complex project delivery, and long-term infrastructure financing. As they expand their portfolio, they are seeking a CFO who can architect the financial engine that supports commercial scale.
The Role:
Our client is looking for a strategic, execution-driven Chief Financial Officer with deep project financing experience—ideally within renewable energy, hydrogen, clean tech, utilities, infrastructure, or adjacent capital-intensive sectors.
You will oversee all aspects of corporate finance, project capital structuring, investor relations, risk, forecasting, and financial operations for a fast-scaling energy company. You will be a key executive partner in evaluating new projects, negotiating financing instruments, and building long-term financial resilience. The CFO will travel regularly throughout North America to project locations and partner sites; a genuine enjoyment of travel is important for long-term success in this role.
What Great Looks Like:
You are a seasoned finance leader who has:
- Successfully structured and closed large-scale project financing deals (debt, equity, blended, government funding, and alternative structures).
- Led financial strategy for organizations with complex capital stacks and multi-year development cycles.
- Comfort operating in early-growth environments while maintaining discipline and clarity in financial operations.
- Strong fluency in the economics of energy infrastructure: project feasibility, IRR, NPV, payback models, CAPEX/OPEX modelling, government incentives, and risk mitigation.
- A calm, steady executive presence with the ability to communicate clearly to technical, commercial, and board stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Strategic Financial Leadership
- Own our client’s long-term financial strategy, forecasting, and capital planning.
- Partner with the CEO, COO, and project teams to evaluate new energy projects and determine financial viability.
- Build and lead a high-performing finance team as the company grows.
2. Project Financing & Capital Structuring
- Lead negotiation, structuring, and execution of project financing including:
- Senior debt
- Tax equity (if applicable)
- Infrastructure funds
- Government financing programs (e.g., SDTC, NRCan, CleanBC)
- Public–private partnerships
- Vendor financing / equipment financing
- Build financial models for large-scale hydrogen/energy projects and present scenarios to executive leadership and the board.
3. Corporate Finance & Treasury
- Optimize capital structure, liquidity, and cash flow as the project pipeline expands.
- Manage banking relationships, investor reporting, and financial risk.
- Oversee working capital, financial controls, insurance, and audit processes.
4. Board & Investor Relations
- Prepare board packages, financial roadmaps, and strategic updates.
- Support capital raising (equity or debt) and maintain investor confidence through consistent communication.
5. Financial Operations & Governance
- Build scalable processes, systems, and KPIs across finance, accounting, and reporting.
- Oversee compliance with BC, Canadian, and sector-specific regulatory requirements.
- Establish processes that support rapid company growth while ensuring accuracy and control.
Experience We’re Looking For:
Must-Have:
- 12–20+ years progressive financial leadership, including at least 5 years in a CFO, VP Finance, or equivalent role.
- Extensive experience in project financing within energy, infrastructure, utilities, renewables, hydrogen, industrials, or capital-intensive technology.
- Proven track record raising or structuring $50M–$500M+ project capital packages.
- Advanced financial modelling skills tailored to infrastructure and long-term assets.
- Experience navigating government funding, grants, and incentives.
Preferred Qualifications:
- CPA, CFA, MBA, or equivalent designation.
- Experience scaling a growth-stage or mid-market clean technology company.
- Experience with engineering-driven businesses or EPC project structures.
- Familiarity with hydrogen production, storage, distribution, or alternative energy systems.
