Position Summary:
Activation Capital is seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to support the Vice President of Finance & Operations for the Virginia Biotechnology Research Partnership Authority and the Virginia Biotechnology Research Park Corporation.
The Senior Accountant will manage day-to-day accounting operations and assist with the preparation and analysis of financial statements. They will ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with reporting standards, often playing a key role in month-end and year-end close processes. Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills are essential for this role.
Key Responsibilities:
- Payroll and Benefits Administration:
- Process semi-monthly payroll and fringe benefits accounting using QuickBooks Time and QuickBooks Diamond Assisted Payroll.
- Oversee employee benefits onboarding and open enrollment.
- Month-End Close:
- Lead and participate in the month-end and year-end close processes, including preparing journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reports.
- Financial Reporting:
- Prepare and analyze financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements, ensuring compliance with GAAP and other regulations.
- General Ledger Management:
- Maintain and reconcile the general ledger, ensuring accuracy and integrity of financial data.
- Perform general accounting functions, including journal entries.
- Accounts Payable and Receivable:
- Oversee and manage accounts payable and accounts receivable processes.
- Budgeting and Forecasting:
- Assist with the preparation of budgets and perform variance analysis.
- Internal Controls:
- Assess and monitor internal controls, identify areas for improvement and ensure compliance with established policies and procedures.
- Audits:
- Lead and participate in financial audits, prepare audit work papers, and interact with auditors.
- Special Projects:
- Participate in special accounting projects, such as system implementations or process improvements.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a comparable alternative.
- Experience:
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with experience in a senior or supervisory role.
- Hands-on experience in government, non-profit, and federal grant accounting and reporting preferred.
- Proficiency in Indirect Cost Rate calculations and submissions is a plus.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise, Stampli Accounts Payable, and Excel.

- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex financial data and identify trends.
- Communication Skills:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with various stakeholders.
