Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and conceptually strong Retail & 3D Experience Designer to join our team. This role will define the look and feel of the brand's experiences in physical spaces—retail environments, pop-ups, events, and trade show booths—and ensure they translate into real-world, buildable environments. The ideal candidate blends retail best practices with high-end spatial design, 3D visualization, and production-ready thinking. You’ll work cross-functionally with Creative, Marketing, Brand, Product, Retail Ops, and external vendors/fabricators to create premium, immersive experiences—including scenting/olfactory moments—that make us unforgettable.
Key Responsibilities:
Retail Experience Design: Concept and design premium, on-brand environments across retail stores, pop-ups, trade shows, and activations—grounded in retail best practices (flow, sightlines, wayfinding, merchandising, conversion/dwell-time thinking).
Audience-Driven Experience Strategy: Design for specific audiences/personas and contexts (e.g., flagship vs. pop-up vs. trade show; consumer vs. wholesale/B2B; new-to-brand vs. loyal customers), translating customer insights into spatial decisions.
Modular System Design: Create modular, reusable booth/space systems that scale across different footprints and layouts (e.g., 10x10, 10x20, 20x20, shop-in-shop formats), with clear rules for reconfiguration.
Space Planning & Journey Mapping: Own traffic flow, decompression zones, product discovery, hero moments, demo areas, lead capture/check-out considerations, and operational constraints—designing for both delight and performance.
3D Design & Visualization: Build and refine 3D models and deliver high-fidelity renderings and walkthroughs to align stakeholders, reduce build risk, and communicate materiality, lighting, and brand tone.
Production-Ready Documentation: Create clear build documentation as applicable (plans, elevations, key details, material/finish callouts, print specs, lighting intent, assembly guidance) to support fabrication and installation.
Vendor/Fabrication Collaboration: Partner with fabricators and vendors from early feasibility through build—briefing, scoping, prototyping, reviewing shop drawings, and supporting onsite install when needed.
Scenting/Olfactory Experience Integration: Concept scenting/olfactory moments as part of the experience (no prior scent experience required), coordinate with scenting partners/vendors, and maintain safety/compliance awareness for public-facing environments.
Brand Translation: Translate our brand identity into physical design systems—premium materials, thoughtful lighting, tactile moments, and consistent brand storytelling across formats.
Budget & Feasibility Thinking: Propose options that protect the creative vision while respecting budgets, timelines, shipping/storage constraints, and Retail Ops realities.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Creative Directors, Graphic Designers, Marketers, Product, and Retail Ops to interpret briefs, present concepts clearly, incorporate feedback, and deliver on campaign objectives.
What You’ll Deliver:
● Retail/pop-up/event/trade show concept packages (mood, story, spatial narrative, materials + finishes)
● 3D models for environments, fixtures, and modular systems
● High-end renderings + walkthroughs (still and/or animated as needed)
● Floor plans and layout variants across multiple footprints/formats
● Customer journey + traffic-flow plans (sightlines, wayfinding, merchandising zones)
● Modular kit-of-parts system (dimensions, components, rules for reconfiguration)
● Setup, assembly, and reset guides (pack lists, steps, storage, QA standards)
● Production-ready documentation (as applicable): elevations, sections, key details, material specs, print specs, lighting intent
● Vendor briefs, fabrication packets, and review notes (scope, expectations, feasibility flags)
● Scenting/olfactory concept notes + vendor coordination plan (with safety/compliance considerations)
What Success Looks Like:
First 90 Days:
● Learn our brand, products, retail priorities, and operational realities; audit past builds and identify what to standardize vs. reinvent.
● Deliver 1–2 strong spatial concept directions for a priority environment (e.g., a trade show booth system or pop-up), including 3D visualization and a modular approach.
● Align cross-functional partners through clear presentations, footprint options, and feasibility-aware design decisions.
● Identify vendor/fabrication pathways and establish a repeatable handoff process (documentation standards, review checkpoints, installation considerations).
Ongoing:
● Ensure physical spaces consistently feel premium, cohesive, and unmistakably on-brand—while performing in-market (strong flow, merchandising clarity, wayfinding, and dwell/conversion thinking).
● Modular systems scale across footprints with minimal rework and consistent execution.
● Builds ship, install, and operate smoothly due to clear documentation, realistic detailing, and strong vendor collaboration.
Key Requirements:
● Experience: 5+ years of retail design, experiential design, trade show booth design, pop-up design, or related spatial/3D experience.
● Portfolio: Strong portfolio demonstrating retail best practices, premium spatial design, 3D visualization (models + renderings/walkthroughs), and at least one concept-to-build project.
● Retail Expertise: Demonstrated understanding of flow, sightlines, wayfinding, merchandising strategy, and conversion/dwell-time thinking.
● Audience & Context Design: Proven ability to design for specific audiences/personas and adapt experiences for different contexts and goals.
● 3D Visualization: High proficiency creating 3D concepts and communication-ready visuals that align stakeholders and guide builds.
● Production & Fabrication: Experience collaborating with vendors/fabricators and producing production-ready documentation as applicable.
● Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present work, interpret feedback, and collaborate effectively across teams.
● Detail-Oriented: A meticulous approach to design systems, documentation, and brand consistency.
● Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and vendors simultaneously while maintaining quality.
Portfolio Must Show (examples we want to see):
● Retail environment(s) or experiential space(s) with clear retail logic (flow/wayfinding/merchandising)
● Premium materiality and brand translation into physical design
● 3D models and high-quality renderings (and ideally a walkthrough)
● A modular/reusable system or scalable kit-of-parts design (multiple footprints/layouts)
● Production-ready documentation or vendor handoff materials (plans/elevations/specs/details)
● Evidence of designing for a specific audience/persona and context (why decisions were made)
● Any multi-sensory work (lighting, sound, tactile, scent)—conceptual is fine for scenting
Tools & Technical Skills:
● 3D Modeling: SketchUp, Rhino, Cinema 4D, Blender, 3ds Max (or equivalent)
● Rendering/Visualization: V-Ray, Enscape, Lumion, Octane, Redshift, Twinmotion, KeyShot (or equivalent)
● Layout/Documentation: AutoCAD, Vectorworks, Revit (or equivalent)
● Adobe: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign (or equivalent)
● Presentation: Keynote/Google Slides/PowerPoint
Additional Qualities:
● We value a collaborative and open-minded approach to building brand experiences. You’ll be expected to take feedback positively, partner cross-functionally, and help teams move from concept to reality efficiently.
● Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and a desire to stay updated on retail/experiential design trends, materials, and fabrication methods are essential.
● Comfort balancing “dream big” creative with real constraints—budget, timelines, safety/compliance, shipping/storage, and install logistics.
If you are passionate about building premium retail and experiential environments and ready to work in a team-oriented environment, we encourage you to apply.
