Position Title: QA/QC Mechanical Inspector

Location: North West England

Reports To: QA/QC Manager

Contract Type: Contract

Discipline Focus: Mechanical

Contract Length: Till Christmas (circa 4 weeks - potential to extend but not guaranteed due to project entering commissioning soon)


Role Purpose

To ensure all mechanical works on the Energy-from-Waste (EfW) project are delivered in full compliance with project specifications, industry codes/standards, manufacturer requirements, and statutory regulations. The QA/QC Mechanical Inspector supports construction and commissioning activities by performing inspections, audits, and verifications across all mechanical installations, welding activities, and pressure systems.


Key Responsibilities

Mechanical Quality Assurance & Control

  • Perform inspections, surveillance, and verification of mechanical works including boilers, pressure vessels, pipework, turbines, rotating equipment, heat exchangers, and balance-of-plant mechanical systems.
  • Monitor and verify welding activities, WPS/PQR compliance, welder qualifications, consumable control, and NDT requirements.
  • Review and approve ITPs, WPSs, Method Statements, and Quality Plans for mechanical scopes.
  • Conduct incoming material inspections, verifying certification, traceability, and conformity to EN, ASME, and PED requirements.
  • Monitor fabrication, assembly, installation, and alignment of mechanical equipment and systems.
  • Ensure correct implementation of DMRs/TQs/ NCRs, including root cause analysis and close-out of quality issues.

Documentation, Records, and Compliance

  • Maintain accurate inspection records, punch lists, redline drawings, and test packs.
  • Witness mechanical testing such as hydrostatic/pressure tests, flow tests, torqueing/verifications, and mechanical run-tests.
  • Ensure mechanical completion against system boundaries via LOTO, RFI, ITR, and MC documentation processes.
  • Support compilation of Turnover Packages (TOPs), Lifetime Quality Records (LTQRs), and documentation for handover to commissioning/client.

Construction & Commissioning Interface

  • Work closely with construction supervisors, commissioning engineers, vendors, and subcontractors to ensure mechanical works meet quality standards.
  • Participate in system walkdowns (A/B/C punch), readiness reviews, and completion milestones.
  • Provide technical clarification on mechanical QA/QC matters to site teams and subcontractors.

HSE & Regulatory Requirements

  • Ensure compliance with PED, Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR), EN 13480/13445, ASME VIII, and other applicable standards.
  • Verify that lifting, rigging, and installation of mechanical equipment follow approved procedures and safety requirements.
  • Promote a strong quality and HSE culture within the contractor and subcontractor teams.


Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Minimum 2/3 years experience in a QA/QC Mechanical Inspector role within Energy-from-Waste, power generation, petrochemical, or heavy industrial projects.
  • Strong technical knowledge of pressure systems, boilers, pipework, rotating equipment, and EPC-style project execution.
  • Experience in welding/NDT oversight (CSWIP 3.1/3.2 or equivalent preferred).
  • Ability to interpret P&IDs, isometrics, GA drawings, specifications, and ITPs.
  • Demonstrable experience with mechanical completion, test packs, and commissioning interfaces.
  • Excellent understanding of ISO 9001 quality management systems and project QA/QC processes.


Desirable

  • Certification in mechanical engineering (HNC/HND/Degree).
  • Familiarity with EfW technologies: grate boilers, flue gas treatment systems, steam turbines, condensers, and fuel handling systems.
  • Lead Auditor (ISO 9001) qualification.
  • Experience with digital Quality Management Systems (QMS), turnover tools, or completions systems (Aconex, GoCompletions, Procore, etc.).
