Principal / Senior Principal Software Engineer, Java & Distributed Systems

District Partners is leading a multi-hire search for a global enterprise technology company solving one of the most consequential challenges facing modern organizations: turning massive volumes of infrastructure data into intelligence that improves security, visibility, and operational control. This is an established, globally scaled business with deep adoption across sophisticated enterprise and public-sector environments, now making a significant investment in the next generation of its cloud-native and AI-enabled platform. Several strategic hires are being made across the Senior and Principal Software Engineer levels, creating opportunities for accomplished builders and influential technical leaders to help shape products operating at exceptional scale.

Why You'll Actually Care

This is the kind of engineering environment where architecture has real consequences. The platform must process large volumes of complex data while maintaining the performance, resilience, and security expected within critical enterprise environments. Senior engineers will own significant systems and product capabilities, while Principal engineers will influence architecture across platforms, establish technical standards, and guide decisions spanning multiple teams. Every position remains hands-on, with direct involvement in designing, building, and delivering production software.

The Basics

The company develops enterprise software that helps large organizations understand and manage increasingly complex digital infrastructure. Its platform sits within business-critical environments where reliability, scalability, security, and performance are fundamental product requirements. The organization has the stability and global reach of an established technology company while continuing to invest aggressively in advanced engineering, AI-enabled capabilities, and platform modernization.

What You'll Be Owning

  • Architect AI-enabled applications that transform high-volume infrastructure and operational data into actionable intelligence
  • Build distributed backend services designed for high throughput, low latency, fault tolerance, and enterprise-scale reliability
  • Design cloud-native microservices and containerized applications deployed across complex hybrid environments
  • Develop high-performance APIs and extensible backend components supporting a broader enterprise platform
  • Address complex challenges involving concurrency, data processing, service communication, scalability, and system resilience
  • Establish engineering standards for architecture, observability, security, testing, performance, and maintainability
  • Apply AI-assisted development tools and automation to improve product functionality, engineering workflows, and developer productivity

The Environment

The engineering environment includes Java and JVM-based backend development, Python or Go, distributed systems, microservices, REST APIs, containers, orchestration platforms, and public cloud infrastructure. The platform processes substantial volumes of network and operational data across physical, cloud, and hybrid environments. Engineers work across system architecture, application development, performance optimization, API design, design reviews, testing, and production delivery. Experience with networking protocols, monitoring platforms, observability, or security-oriented enterprise software is particularly relevant.

What You Bring To The Table

  • Significant experience designing and building complex enterprise applications, backend platforms, or distributed systems
  • Deep hands-on expertise in Java, supported by production experience with Python or Go
  • Strong understanding of concurrency, multithreading, data structures, algorithms, service communication, and distributed computing
  • Experience designing microservices, REST APIs, containerized applications, and cloud-native architectures
  • Proven success delivering scalable, secure, resilient, observable, and maintainable production software
  • Experience incorporating AI/ML capabilities or AI-enabled tools into commercial products, engineering workflows, or automation
  • Knowledge of networking fundamentals, common protocols, infrastructure monitoring, observability, cybersecurity, or related platforms

A Few Things Worth Knowing

  • Levels: Multiple openings ranging from Senior Software Engineer through Principal Software Engineer
  • Compensation: Total cash compensation ranges from approximately $275,000 to $400,000, depending on level, experience, qualifications, and final compensation structure. (Compensation for these positions will vary by level, experience, qualifications, and the company’s approved salary ranges)
  • Location: South Bay Area, California
  • Work Model: Hybrid, with 3 days per week onsite
  • Engagement Type: Full-time, direct hire
