About the Opportunity

Our client is seeking an experienced Interim Payroll Manager to lead and stabilize their payroll function during a period of high activity and system transformation. Reporting to the Director of Finance, this role offers a hands-on opportunity to manage complex multi-jurisdictional payrolls across Canada and the U.S., while supporting a team of six junior payroll specialists. You’ll play a key role in guiding and mentoring the team through a busy year-end period, addressing compliance challenges, and remediating issues from a prior UKG implementation. This is an exciting opportunity to make an immediate impact within a collaborative and fast-paced environment that values expertise, accountability, and leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process Canadian and U.S. payrolls for both hourly and salaried employees across multiple provinces and states.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of six payroll professionals to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
  • Oversee compliance with Canadian and U.S. payroll legislation and unionized requirements under multiple collective agreements.
  • Manage benefits administration, including Workers’ Compensation and group benefits programs.
  • Complete and file year-end documentation including T4s, W2s, ACA, EHT, and WCB.
  • Execute remittances for CRA, WCB, EHT, RRSP/DPSP, and related regulatory bodies.
  • Support a major UKG payroll system clean-up, ensuring data integrity and process consistency.
  • Reconcile payroll data, manage accruals, and contribute to payroll budgeting and variance reporting.
  • Participate in developing and improving payroll policies and procedures during system optimization.

What You Bring

  • Proven experience processing both Canadian and U.S. payrolls, including year-end compliance.
  • Strong working knowledge of unionized payroll environments and collective agreements.
  • Advanced proficiency with UKG Pro; experience troubleshooting and optimizing its functionality.
  • Expertise with Excel (pivot tables, data analysis) and exposure to ADP or Avanti.
  • Demonstrated success leading, mentoring, and developing junior payroll teams.
  • Experience supporting system implementation or clean-up projects.
  • High attention to detail, analytical skills, and ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Availability to work on-site 4–5 days per week for direct team and system support.
