Employment Type: Full-Time

Location: Mississauga, ON (Hybrid - 4 days in-office)

Salary: $200,000–$225,000

Industry: Agriculture

About the Opportunity

Our client is a private equity-backed agricultural producer operating a large network of nursery and seed-orchard sites across Canada and the U.S., producing several hundred million units annually to support reforestation and sustainable land management. The business has grown quickly and is now mid-way through a broader finance transformation as new permanent leadership is put in place.

This Controller role exists to bring stability and credibility to the accounting function during that transition. You'll own day-to-day accounting end-to-end — close, reconciliations, and the timely delivery of management and private equity reporting — while partnering closely with operations and the executive team to rebuild trust in the numbers.

The mandate goes beyond steady-state accounting: you'll strengthen controls and governance, reduce manual workarounds, and support active ERP and payroll system initiatives. Reporting to the VP Finance/CFO, you'll also help stabilize and coach the existing accounting team. It's a hands-on, builder's role for someone who wants real ownership over how a finance function gets rebuilt.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close, including journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations
  • Lead consolidations and intercompany eliminations, including FX translation and CTA calculations
  • Prepare financial statements and KPI reporting; own private equity reporting deliverables
  • Oversee AR, AP, and payroll functions and review outputs for accuracy
  • Manage bank positions, covenant compliance, and working capital; own the statement of cash flows
  • Ensure US/Canada tax compliance
  • Lead the external audit relationship and drive improvements to internal controls
  • Re-engineer processes and automate manual workarounds; contribute to finance systems strategy and org design
  • Support ERP and payroll/time & attendance system implementations
  • Support M&A activity, including acquisition integration, due diligence, and debt financing
  • Partner with operations and executive leadership to improve data integrity and transparency; lead cross-functional meetings and turn discussion into decision-ready insight
  • Stabilize, coach, and build capability across the accounting team as permanent leadership is established

What You Bring

  • CPA designation
  • Strong full-cycle accounting and financial reporting background in a complex, multi-entity or private equity-backed environment
  • Proven ability to lead month-end/quarter-end close
  • Hands-on experience strengthening internal controls and rebuilding financial credibility in a transitional environment
  • Experience with ERP systems and driving system/process improvement
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguity and building infrastructure from the ground up
  • Strong stakeholder management — able to partner across finance, operations, and the executive team

Nice to Have

  • M&A integration or due diligence experience
  • Payroll or ERP implementation experience
  • Change management experience in a scaling, PE-backed organization
