Employment Type: Contract (3 months)

Location: Toronto, ON (Hybrid 2-3 days onsite)

Rate: $65 - 85/hr

Industry: Non-Profit / Home & Community Care

Position Type: Backfill

About the Opportunity

Our client is a well-established, not-for-profit home and community care organization serving the Greater Toronto Area — part of a larger integrated health system. With over 50 years of community history, a workforce of nearly 1,300, and revenue that has crossed the $100M mark on the back of consistent double-digit growth, this is an organization that has scaled meaningfully and is continuing to grow.

The finance function is evolving to match that scale. This Interim Controller role exists to provide stability and technical leadership during an active period of transition. Following recent leadership changes in the finance department, the organization brought in experienced senior leadership to stabilize operations — and this role is a critical piece of that effort. The immediate mandate is clear: close Q1, clean up the month-end process, and give the team the structure and direction they need to operate effectively.

Reporting to the Director of Finance, and working closely with the Interim CFO, the Controller will take hands-on ownership of the general ledger, oversee a team of approximately five transactional staff, and drive meaningful improvements to the close cycle. This is a role for someone who has seen what a well-run finance operation looks like — and knows how to build practical fixes that actually stick. For a process-improvement-minded CPA who wants real ownership and the chance to leave something better than they found it, this is a meaningful contract with visible impact from day one.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own the full month-end and quarter-end close process, including journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations
  • Drive improvements to the close cycle — currently running the full length of the month — with the goal of compressing timelines through better scheduling and process discipline
  • Lead the Q1 close and support board and funder reporting deliverables tied to that cycle
  • Oversee AP, AR, and billing functions, providing day-to-day technical direction to a team of approximately five staff
  • Manage government and funder reporting submissions, including Ontario Health / HCCSS-funded program reporting
  • Identify and document manual or Excel-dependent processes and implement practical, sustainable improvements
  • Work within the Acumatica ERP environment (managed through a third-party consultant) and reporting tools including Crystal Reports and Vaexio/Lexio
  • Partner with the Director of Finance and Interim CFO to surface issues proactively and maintain visibility into the financial position of the organization

What You Bring

  • CPA designation with public accounting training strongly preferred
  • Hands-on, full-cycle accounting experience — this role books entries, runs reconciliations, and owns the close directly
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and develop a small team of junior, non-designated accounting staff
  • Experience in a not-for-profit, government-funded, or healthcare-adjacent environment; familiarity with Ontario government funding models (Ontario Health, HCCSS/LHIN) considered a strong asset
  • Comfortable operating in a lower-maturity systems environment — Excel-heavy workflows, mid-market ERP, and processes that aren't fully documented
  • A self-starter who can find information independently and bring structure without waiting to be directed
  • Strong process orientation — you can identify what's inefficient, explain why it matters, and implement fixes that the team can actually follow

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with Acumatica or comparable mid-market ERP (NetSuite, Sage Intacct, or similar)
  • Experience with Crystal Reports or Vaexio/Lexio reporting environments
  • Background in home care, community health, or social services sectors
