The Role
We are looking for an experienced Lead Design Engineer to take technical ownership of HV grid connection projects up to 132kV across the UK. This role sits at the heart of the design function, providing technical leadership, design assurance, and mentoring across both primary and secondary disciplines.
You’ll work closely with project managers, DNOs, ICPs, and internal stakeholders to deliver compliant, high-quality HV designs from concept through to construction and energisation.
The position is based in Swindon, with an expectation of 2–3 days per week in the office, offering flexibility alongside collaboration.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and technical delivery of HV projects up to 132kV
- Act as the technical authority for either primary or secondary design, with a strong understanding of both
- Produce, review, and approve HV design documentation, including:
- Single line diagrams
- Protection philosophies
- Earthing designs
- Substation layouts and equipment specifications
- Ensure designs comply with:
- UK Grid Codes
- DNO / National Grid standards
- Relevant IEC, BS, and EN standards
- Interface with DNOs, ICPs, and other third parties during design approvals
- Support project teams through design reviews, technical queries, and construction phases
- Mentor and technically guide junior and intermediate engineers
- Contribute to continuous improvement of design standards, tools, and processes
About You
- Proven experience as an HV Design Engineer within the UK power sector
- Strong experience delivering designs up to 132kV grid connections
- Background in either:

Primary design (substations, plant layout, earthing, equipment), or

Secondary design (protection & control, schematics, relay settings)
- Comfortable operating in a lead or senior technical role
- Solid understanding of UK DNO and National Grid requirements
- Ability to work collaboratively across engineering and project teams
- Eligible to work in the UK
Desirable
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards chartership
- Experience working for an ICP, EPC, consultancy, or DNO
- Familiarity with design tools such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar
