The Role
We are seeking an experienced HV Commissioning Engineer with current or previous National Grid authorisation to support the commissioning of high-voltage infrastructure projects across Southern England and North London.
This is a field-based role working on live and pre-energisation environments, playing a critical part in ensuring HV assets are commissioned safely, compliantly, and in line with National Grid and UK Grid Code requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out commissioning activities on HV plant and systems in accordance with National Grid procedures and safety rules
- Act under relevant National Grid authorisations (e.g. SAP, AP, CP depending on scope)
- Commission HV equipment including:
- Switchgear, transformers, protection systems
- Primary plant and associated secondary systems
- Execute and sign off commissioning test documentation, switching schedules, and safety paperwork
- Interface directly with National Grid, DNOs, ICPs, and project teams
- Support outage planning, energisation, and return-to-service activities
- Identify and resolve commissioning issues on site, ensuring minimal disruption and maximum safety
- Maintain full compliance with UK safety standards, site rules, and permit systems
About You
- Proven experience as an HV Commissioning Engineer within the UK power sector

National Grid authorised (current or lapsed with recent experience)
- Strong experience working on UK transmission or distribution networks
- Comfortable working across live substations and operational environments
- Excellent understanding of HV safety rules, switching, and commissioning procedures
- Flexible and willing to travel across Southern England / North London
Essential
- National Grid authorisation(s) relevant to the role
- Experience commissioning HV assets in the UK
- Full UK driving licence
- Right to work in the UK
Desirable
- Experience up to 132kV / 275kV / 400kV
- SAP or Senior Authorised Person status
- Background with National Grid, DNOs, ICPs, or major EPC contractors
