HV Cable Design Engineer – UK Projects


Location: England (Various office locations / hybrid options available)

About the Role:


A UK-based large Independent Connection Provider (ICP), delivering critical electrical infrastructure projects nationwide, is looking to expand its team with experienced HV Cable Design Engineers.

This role involves the full lifecycle design of high voltage (HV) cable systems for UK transmission and distribution networks. You’ll work on complex and high-value projects, interfacing with DNOs, National Grid, and private clients, and ensuring compliance with all relevant UK standards.


⚠️ Important: Candidates must have a minimum of 2 years of hands-on UK HV cable design experience. Applicants without UK design experience will not be considered.


Key Responsibilities


  • Design HV cable routes and systems (11kV to 132kV and above) in compliance with UK standards
  • Prepare cable calculations including thermal ratings, voltage drop, pulling tensions, and fault current ratings
  • Conduct site surveys, feasibility studies, and route assessments
  • Develop detailed design packages including drawings, specifications, and bill of quantities
  • Liaise with DNOs, consultants, and contractors to ensure smooth project delivery
  • Ensure compliance with ENA, BS7671, BS EN 50522, National Grid TS, and CDM Regulations
  • Support procurement processes, risk assessments, and technical reviews
  • Participate in design reviews, audits, and workshops


About You

  • Degree or HND in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent experience)
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in HV cable design for UK transmission/distribution projects
  • Strong understanding of UK DNO requirements and National Grid specifications
  • Familiar with cable design tools and software such as CYMCAP, AutoCAD, GIS platforms
  • Ability to interpret geotechnical and civil data for route planning
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills
  • A proactive team player with attention to technical detail and safety standards
