Mechanical Engineer – Mid-Level
Reports To: Mechanical Engineering Manager
We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to take ownership of the design, engineering, documentation, and technical support of assigned mechanical projects. This is a hands-on role requiring strong knowledge of machine design, power transmission, manufacturing, fabrication, and mechanical systems. The ideal candidate can take a project from specification and concept through design, fabrication, testing, and final documentation while working closely with Sales, Drafting, Electrical Engineering, Production, and Service.
Background Requirements
- Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- 3–7 years of relevant mechanical engineering experience, preferably in machine design, industrial equipment, or manufacturing.
- Strong background in machine design and power transmission technologies.
- Working knowledge of sheet metal fabrication, structural steel, welding, shop fabrication processes, and manufacturing methods.
- Understanding of strength of materials, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and mechanical engineering principles.
- Practical experience with AutoCAD; experience with Autodesk Inventor is preferred.
- Strong understanding of engineering drawings, tolerances, materials, components, and manufacturing processes.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
Primary Responsibilities
- Take full responsibility for the engineering and design of assigned mechanical projects, from initial specifications through production, testing, and project closeout.
- Review machine specifications for completeness, technical feasibility, and manufacturability.
- Perform engineering calculations to determine equipment requirements and support sound component, machine, and feeder design.
- Create or direct the creation of layouts, sketches, detail drawings, assembly drawings, approval drawings, and 3D models.
- Work closely with the Drafting Department to ensure drawings are accurate, complete, and meet engineering requirements.
- Review completed drawings for accuracy, dimensions, tolerances, and technical content.
- Create and maintain accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs) and engineering documentation.
- Specify, document, and procure non-stock and buy-out components.
- Recommend product improvements and manufacturing methods that improve quality, performance, reliability, cost, or manufacturability.
- Coordinate with Electrical Engineering on electro-mechanical design and integration issues.
- Support Sales with technical information, project requirements, and customer-related engineering questions.
- Prepare drawing transmittals and approval documentation for customer review.
- Work directly with Production to resolve engineering issues and provide assembly instructions, drawing clarifications, and technical support.
- Perform periodic in-process fabrication and assembly inspections to ensure work meets engineering requirements.
- Perform incoming inspections of specialty buy-out components.
- Perform final inspections of completed equipment and ensure all equipment documentation is accurate and up to date.
- Provide technical assistance to the Service Department, particularly during equipment testing and commissioning.
- Close out assigned projects and provide all required documentation to Sales in a timely manner.
- Maintain accurate records of project work and time spent on assigned tasks.
- Follow all company policies, procedures, engineering standards, and safety requirements.
