Sr Structural Engineer – Forensic Analysis
(Relocation Available)
This position involves advanced engineering work across structural and civil disciplines, with a primary emphasis on forensic investigation, failure analysis, and structural performance evaluation. The role includes analyzing building and structural failures, reconstructing accidents, and assessing damage to buildings, infrastructure, and civil-structural systems resulting from construction defects, environmental events, or safety incidents.
The ideal candidate brings strong structural engineering experience, sound forensic judgment, and the ability to interpret complex engineering conditions in both field investigations and legal contexts. While exposure to transportation or infrastructure systems is beneficial, deep structural engineering expertise is essential for success in this role.
This role blends forensic structural engineering, failure investigation, and accident analysis. Formal training in accident investigation and reconstruction will be provided upon hire.
Responsibilities
Structural Engineering & Failure Analysis
- Analyze structural systems, load paths, and failure mechanisms using sound engineering principles
- Investigate failures and distress involving steel, concrete, masonry, wood, stone, and composite structures
- Evaluate damage associated with storm, wind, ice, moisture intrusion, fire, drainage issues, and workmanship
- Assess premises, walkways, platforms, and building components related to safety or failure claims
- Apply structural analysis and modeling tools to support forensic opinions and conclusions
Forensic Engineering & Accident Reconstruction
- Perform expert forensic analysis and evaluation of construction accidents, failures, and claims
- Investigate vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle incidents where structural, walkway, or site conditions are contributing factors
- Conduct forensic evaluations of building and structural failures, degradation, and distress
- Perform accident reconstruction using accepted engineering and forensic methodologies
- Identify root causes, contributing factors, and responsibility, and develop clear, defensible engineering conclusions
- Document site conditions through photography, measurements, detailed field notes, and 3D scanning as needed
Infrastructure & Site Engineering
- Evaluate site-related and infrastructure elements contributing to forensic claims, including:
- Grading, drainage, and surface conditions
- Accessways, walkways, and clear zones
- Assess stormwater and drainage systems and impacts on adjacent structures or properties
- Review infrastructure-related conditions as they relate to structural performance or safety
- Bridge inspection or design experience is considered a strong advantage
Construction Safety & Standards Compliance
- Evaluate construction and workplace safety conditions, including:
- Fall protection systems
- Scaffolding, shoring, roofs, platforms, and guard systems
- Material erection, rigging, and demolition activities
- Assess compliance with applicable codes, standards, and regulations, including:
- OSHA, IBC, BOCA, UBC, ANSI, ASTM, ACI, AISC
- Ensure investigations meet accepted forensic practices and industry standards
Analysis, Reporting & Expert Consultation
- Prepare comprehensive, well-supported forensic engineering reports
- Provide expert opinions on causation, liability, and remediation or repair strategies
- Work collaboratively with attorneys, contractors, architects, insurers, and other engineering professionals
- Provide expert consultation, including participation in depositions and courtroom testimony, if needed- minimal workflow
- Communicate complex engineering concepts clearly and professionally to non-technical audiences
Technology & Tools
- Utilize structural analysis and modeling software
- Apply forensic documentation tools and emerging technologies
- Operate or learn to operate high-definition cameras and 3D scanning equipment
- Use Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and research tools for report preparation and case development
