Head Mechanic
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced and dependable Head Mechanic to oversee the maintenance, repair, and overall performance of a heavy equipment fleet. This role requires strong mechanical expertise, leadership abilities, and hands-on experience with diesel engines, hydraulics, welding, and diagnostic systems.
The ideal candidate will ensure equipment operates safely and efficiently while managing shop operations, coordinating repairs, and supporting field operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair heavy equipment including loaders, pavers, graders, excavators, rollers, trucks, and related machinery
- Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, and routine servicing on fleet equipment
- Repair and maintain hydraulic systems including hoses, cylinders, pumps, and valves
- Conduct welding, fabrication, and structural repairs as needed
- Lead and supervise mechanics and maintenance personnel
- Maintain accurate service records, repair documentation, and parts inventory
- Coordinate repairs and maintenance schedules to minimize equipment downtime
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations, operational standards, and maintenance procedures
- Order parts, tools, and shop supplies as needed
- Assist with long-term maintenance planning and equipment scheduling
- Support field crews by ensuring equipment readiness and operational reliability
Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of heavy equipment mechanical experience
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and welding/fabrication
- Previous supervisory or leadership experience preferred
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic information
- CDL preferred but not required
- Valid driver’s license required
- Strong troubleshooting, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work in both shop and field environments
Preferred Skills
- Experience working with asphalt, paving, or construction equipment
- Certifications in welding, hydraulics, or diesel technology
- Familiarity with computerized diagnostic equipment and repair software
