Club Controller

Location: Monterey, California

Compensation: $100,000+ depending on experience and qualifications

We are seeking an experienced Club Controller to oversee the accounting and financial operations of a premier hospitality and private club organization in the Monterey, California area. This is a highly visible position that will partner closely with club leadership and corporate finance while taking ownership of the property's day-to-day accounting activities.

The ideal candidate brings a strong hospitality accounting background, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to balance hands-on accounting responsibilities with broader financial oversight.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the club's day-to-day accounting and financial operations while maintaining accurate and timely financial records.
  • Manage accounts payable and receivable activities, including vendor payments, member payments, deposits, and account reconciliations.
  • Oversee member billing processes, research account discrepancies, and assist with resolving statement or payment questions.
  • Monitor delinquent accounts and coordinate appropriate collection activity in accordance with established policies.
  • Review invoices for proper departmental coding and work with department leaders to maintain consistent accounting practices.
  • Coordinate weekly vendor payments and regularly reconcile vendor statements to identify outstanding or missing invoices.
  • Maintain organized documentation for invoices, payments, accounting transactions, and supporting records.
  • Manage cash reconciliation activities, daily transaction posting, and bank deposits.
  • Complete monthly bank reconciliations and support the overall month-end closing process.
  • Prepare and reconcile biweekly payroll and process employee onboarding, compensation changes, and terminations within applicable systems.
  • Coordinate accounting-related changes associated with new memberships, membership modifications, and resignations.
  • Prepare annual 1099 reporting and assist with other tax-related accounting requirements.
  • Produce financial statements, forecasts, management reporting, and financial analysis for club leadership.
  • Review operating performance against budgets and forecasts, identifying significant revenue, expense, or cost variances.
  • Partner with management to investigate financial concerns and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
  • Help maintain and improve internal controls, accounting procedures, budgeting processes, and financial policies.
  • Safeguard confidential financial, employee, and member information.
  • Respond to accounting questions from members, vendors, management, and internal departments in a professional and timely manner.
  • Support audits, budgeting initiatives, special projects, and other finance-related priorities as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related discipline preferred; equivalent progressive accounting experience will also be considered.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within hospitality, clubs, resorts, hotels, or a similar service-oriented environment.
  • Private club or country club accounting experience is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of general accounting principles, financial reporting, reconciliations, AP/AR, payroll, and month-end processes.
  • Demonstrated leadership and effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple deadlines and competing priorities.
  • Comfortable working across departments and partnering with both operational and financial leadership.
  • Ability to work independently, take ownership of responsibilities, and consistently deliver accurate, timely work.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain discretion when working with confidential financial, employee, and member information.
