Job Title: Controller
Position Summary
The Controller serves as the senior financial leader responsible for overseeing all accounting operations, financial strategy, compliance, and performance management. This role provides strategic guidance to executive leadership while ensuring the organization maintains strong financial controls, profitability, and operational discipline.
The ideal candidate brings extensive financial leadership experience, preferably in a construction or project-based environment, with deep expertise in financial modeling, job costing, ERP systems, and process improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Strategy & Leadership
- Lead annual budgeting, forecasting, and profitability modeling processes
- Establish and monitor break-even analysis to ensure operational sustainability
- Develop cash flow strategies and capital planning initiatives to support growth
- Optimize employee ownership or equity-based financial structures (if applicable)
- Hold operational leaders accountable for financial performance and project profitability
Financial Operations & Compliance
- Oversee Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, General Ledger, and month-end close processes
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and applicable financial reporting standards
- Conduct financial risk assessments related to project bidding, contracts, and cost controls
- Implement and maintain strong internal controls to ensure financial accuracy and data integrity
- Oversee ERP system utilization to enhance financial visibility and reporting
Payroll & Performance-Based Compensation
- Oversee payroll administration and ensure compliance with federal and state regulations
- Collaborate with HR to enhance payroll systems and employee benefit integration
- Design and manage commission and bonus structures aligned with profitability and performance metrics
Profitability, Growth & Performance Metrics
- Maintain target net profit margins and track key financial performance indicators (KPIs)
- Oversee job costing, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, and project profitability analysis
- Identify cost-saving opportunities and process improvements to enhance operational efficiency
- Leverage financial analytics tools to improve forecasting accuracy and risk assessment
Technology & Financial Systems
- Lead ERP implementation and optimization initiatives
- Integrate automation and analytics tools to improve reporting efficiency
- Optimize financial workflows to enhance real-time decision-making and operational insight
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required)
- 10+ years of progressive financial leadership experience
- CPA preferred
- Experience in construction or project-based industries strongly preferred
- Strong expertise in financial modeling, job costing, WIP reporting, and risk management
- Experience with ERP systems (construction-focused systems preferred)
- Proven track record of implementing financial process improvements and automation
