Assistant Controller

Position Overview

The Assistant Controller is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day financial operations of multiple nonprofit foundations and an affiliated alumni organization. This role provides financial leadership and accounting support to help each organization effectively carry out its mission while maintaining accurate, timely, and compliant financial records.

The Assistant Controller will oversee financial reporting, general ledger activities, reconciliations, budgeting, accounts payable, and financial analysis. This position will also support audit activities, ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), improve accounting processes and procedures, and serve as a key financial resource for the organizations supported by the accounting team.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Operations & Accounting

  • Supervise the day-to-day financial operations of multiple nonprofit foundations and the affiliated alumni organization.
  • Oversee general accounting activities and ensure financial transactions are accurately recorded and properly supported.
  • Monitor and manage general ledger activity to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Review and ensure timely completion of account reconciliations.
  • Oversee accounts payable activities and related financial processes.
  • Ensure financial operations are conducted in accordance with established policies, procedures, and accounting standards.

Financial Reporting

  • Prepare and/or oversee the preparation of internal and audited financial statements.
  • Prepare and review other financial reports required by management and supported organizations.
  • Ensure financial reports are accurate, complete, and delivered in a timely manner.
  • Review financial information and provide analysis and explanations of significant variances.
  • Provide periodic and ad hoc financial analysis to support organizational decision-making.

Budgeting & Financial Analysis

  • Coordinate or assist with the annual budgeting process.
  • Monitor financial performance against approved budgets and identify significant variances.
  • Provide financial analysis and recommendations to support effective financial management.
  • Assist leadership and supported organizations in understanding financial results and trends.

Compliance & Accounting Standards

  • Ensure accounting activities and financial reporting comply with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Research accounting issues and provide guidance regarding appropriate accounting treatment and compliance.
  • Assist with the interpretation and implementation of accounting requirements affecting the supported organizations.
  • Help develop and maintain accounting processes and procedures that promote accuracy, consistency, and efficiency.

Audit Coordination

  • Assist with coordinating annual financial statement audits and other audit activities.
  • Serve as a liaison between the organization and external auditors.
  • Coordinate requested schedules, documentation, and supporting information for auditors.
  • Review audit requests and help ensure timely and accurate responses.
  • Assist with addressing accounting or reporting issues identified during the audit process.

Process Improvement & Leadership

  • Assist with the development, implementation, and improvement of accounting processes and procedures.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the efficiency, accuracy, and consistency of financial operations.
  • Provide supervision and guidance related to day-to-day accounting activities.
  • Serve as a financial resource to the nonprofit foundations and affiliated organizations supported by the accounting team.
  • Serve as a backup to the CFO as needed.
