Position Summary
The Controls Designer is responsible for designing and documenting industrial control panels that support automation projects. This role involves creating accurate, standards-compliant electrical designs using AutoCAD and EPLAN, collaborating with internal teams and customers, and supporting projects throughout the design, build, and implementation phases. This is considered an entry-level to mid-level role within the Controls Design team with strong opportunities for technical growth and career advancement.
Key Responsibilities
- Design industrial control panels using AutoCAD and EPLAN, including electrical schematics and panel layouts
- Select and size electrical components based on project specifications and applicable industry standards
- Perform panel layout optimization and basic thermal calculations for heating and cooling considerations
- Prepare complete drawing packages for fabrication and installation
- Execute assigned design tasks while supporting project schedules and deliverables
- Collaborate with project managers, panel shop personnel, and internal engineering teams
- Provide design support during panel fabrication and field implementation
- Participate in customer discussions during quoting, design reviews, and project execution as needed
- Interpret technical requirements and incorporate customer feedback into designs
- Apply relevant industry standards and codes including NFPA 70 (NEC) and NFPA 79
- Follow established internal design standards, documentation procedures, and quality requirements
- Support additional departmental and organizational initiatives as needed
Qualifications
- Associate degree in Engineering or related technical field with at least 2 years of related experience, OR
- Minimum of 4 years of relevant controls design experience
- Working knowledge of PLCs, motor controllers, sensors, and industrial instrumentation
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and system design documentation
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office applications
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently while maintaining quality and productivity standards
- Valid Driver’s License and ability to pass required drug/alcohol screening
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with industrial control system design concepts and best practices
- Experience using EPLAN Electric P8 and Pro Panel (v2.9 or newer)
- Exposure to 3D control panel layout and enclosure modeling
