Compressor Mechanic

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Compressor Mechanic to support the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of gas compressors and related production equipment in an oil and gas field environment.

The Compressor Mechanic will perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, inspections, and repairs on compressor packages, engines, drivers, coolers, valves, piping, lubrication systems, pumps, and other field equipment. This position works closely with operators, field supervisors, measurement and instrumentation personnel, vendors, and operations teams to minimize equipment downtime and maintain reliable production.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on, safety-focused mechanical professional who can diagnose equipment issues, work independently in the field, and respond effectively to maintenance needs with limited supervision.

Key Responsibilities

Compressor Maintenance & Repair

• Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on gas compressors and related production equipment.
• Inspect and maintain compressor packages, engines, drivers, coolers, scrubbers, valves, piping, lubrication systems, and pumps.
• Troubleshoot mechanical problems and determine the appropriate repair or replacement requirements.
• Repair or replace mechanical components such as bearings, seals, gaskets, belts, hoses, filters, valves, and lubricants.
• Conduct equipment inspections to identify wear, leaks, corrosion, abnormal vibration, overheating, unusual noise, and other potential issues.
• Ensure equipment is properly maintained and ready for safe and reliable operation.

Troubleshooting & Equipment Reliability

• Respond to compressor and production equipment problems in a timely manner.
• Diagnose equipment failures and perform repairs to minimize production downtime.
• Identify recurring mechanical issues and recommend corrective actions.
• Monitor equipment performance and identify opportunities to improve reliability and operating efficiency.
• Work with operations personnel to determine equipment priorities and maintenance needs.

Safety & Compliance

• Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and environmental requirements.
• Follow proper lockout/tagout (LOTO) and safe work practices when performing maintenance.
• Participate in safety meetings, job safety analyses, inspections, and incident investigations as required.
• Properly use required PPE and maintain awareness of hazards involving gas, pressure, rotating machinery, stored energy, and other field conditions.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area.

Documentation & Communication

• Maintain accurate records of inspections, maintenance activities, repairs, parts usage, and equipment conditions.
• Document equipment failures, downtime, root causes, completed repairs, and recommended follow-up work.
• Communicate equipment conditions, repair requirements, parts needs, and maintenance priorities to supervisors and field operations teams.
• Ensure maintenance activities are properly documented in company systems or approved maintenance logs.

General Field Support

• Assist with equipment installations, facility maintenance, functional testing, and field improvement projects.
• Provide basic welding, fabrication, light electrical, or controls troubleshooting support when qualified and authorized.
• Coordinate with vendors and contractors when specialized equipment repairs or services are required.
• Operate company vehicles and travel between compressor stations, well sites, production facilities, and other field locations.
• Participate in an on-call or emergency response rotation as required.
• Perform other maintenance and mechanical duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

• 3–8 years of hands-on mechanical maintenance or repair experience in oil and gas, compression, industrial, heavy equipment, trucking, agricultural, or a related field.
• Strong mechanical troubleshooting and repair skills.
• Experience working with rotating equipment, engines, compressors, pumps, or similar mechanical systems.
• Ability to read and understand equipment manuals, maintenance procedures, and technical documentation.
• Ability to work independently and prioritize maintenance activities in a field environment.
• Strong commitment to workplace safety and safe work practices.
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel between field locations.
• Strong communication and problem-solving skills.

Preferred

• Previous oil and gas field experience.
• Experience maintaining reciprocating or rotary gas compressors.
• Experience with compressor engines, drivers, coolers, scrubbers, valves, and lubrication systems.
• Experience troubleshooting pumps and other rotating equipment.
• Basic welding and fabrication experience.
• Basic electrical or instrumentation troubleshooting experience.
• Experience working at remote field locations with limited supervision.
• Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) or electronic maintenance records
