Software Engineer – AI-Forward Product Engineering
Reports to: Head of Engineering
Direct Reports: None
We are looking for a product-minded Software Engineer who is highly comfortable working with AI-assisted and agentic development workflows.
This is not a traditional engineering role where success is measured simply by how much code you write yourself. You’ll use AI coding agents extensively, breaking complex product requirements into well-defined tasks, directing and reviewing generated work, validating quality, and continuously improving the development processes around these tools.
You’ll join a small, highly collaborative team building software that supports complex, real-world government workflows. Your work will directly influence the products customers use every day and the communities those organizations serve.
Why Join?
The company develops technology that helps public-sector organizations operate more accurately, efficiently, and fairly. Its products support important administrative workflows and help government teams make better use of their data and resources.
The engineering organization has adopted an AI-first development approach in practice, not simply as an experiment. AI coding agents are incorporated throughout the software development lifecycle, including implementation, code review, testing, documentation, prototyping, and development automation.
Engineers remain accountable for what ultimately reaches production. You’ll help determine where agents can operate autonomously, where human judgment is required, and how development workflows can continuously improve.
Because this is a small engineering team, you’ll have meaningful ownership over architecture, development practices, and the products being delivered.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrate a customer-focused mindset, ownership, empathy, and a willingness to go beyond the minimum required.
- Coordinate multiple AI coding agents and break specifications into clear, independent tasks that can be executed safely in parallel.
- Own the review and verification process for AI-generated code, assessing correctness, architectural consistency, potential impact, and production readiness.
- Improve the infrastructure surrounding agent-assisted development, including reusable instructions, policies, automation, documentation, and feedback loops.
- Deliver features across multiple products using modern deployment practices, including feature flags and frequent production releases.
- Take a specification-first approach: clearly define requirements, expected behavior, and testing criteria before implementation.
- Work directly with customers when appropriate to understand operational workflows and translate real-world problems into effective product solutions.
- Collaborate closely with Product, Engineering, and Customer Success teams to investigate and resolve technical challenges.
- Consider scalability, maintainability, observability, security, and cost when making engineering decisions.
Requirements
- 3–7 years of professional software engineering experience building and shipping production software.
- Hands-on experience using modern agentic coding tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, or comparable platforms as part of your regular development workflow.
- Experience coordinating multiple AI agents or parallel AI-assisted development workflows.
- An understanding of common agentic-development failure modes, such as incorrect assumptions, goal drift, conflicting changes, unnecessary execution loops, and confidently incorrect output.
- Strong code-review capabilities with the ability to identify architectural and systemic problems, rather than focusing only on implementation details.
- A specification-first mindset and the ability to clearly define what successful completion looks like before development begins.
- Product-oriented thinking and a willingness to interact directly with customers.
- Experience thinking about software as a system, including data models, multi-tenancy, observability, scalability, reliability, and infrastructure costs.
- Experience in a smaller or fast-moving organization where you have owned features or systems end to end.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with some of the following would be beneficial:
-
Frontend: Vue 3, TypeScript, Pinia, PrimeVue, Tailwind CSS
-
Backend: Python, FastAPI
-
Data & Infrastructure: PostgreSQL/PostGIS, Celery, Redis
- Experience developing reusable AI-agent instructions, coding-agent skills, hooks, guardrails, or approval workflows for engineering teams
- Playwright and Model Context Protocol (MCP)
- Feature-flag platforms and progressive delivery practices
- Component libraries or design systems
- Authentication and observability platforms such as Auth0, Sentry, or Datadog
- AWS or similar cloud infrastructure
