Director of Tax
Position Summary
The Director of Tax is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing tax advisory, planning, compliance, and consulting services for high-net-worth individuals, entrepreneurs, family offices, trusts, partnerships, and closely held businesses. This role serves as both a technical tax expert and strategic advisor, helping clients navigate complex tax matters while identifying opportunities to preserve wealth, improve tax efficiency, and support long-term financial objectives.
The ideal candidate is a well-rounded tax generalist with deep experience across individual, partnership, trust, estate, and corporate taxation. In addition to technical expertise, this individual will be responsible for leading client engagements, developing and mentoring tax professionals, and contributing to business development and practice growth initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Tax Advisory & Client Service
- Serve as a trusted advisor to high-net-worth individuals, entrepreneurs, family offices, and privately held businesses.
- Lead tax planning and compliance engagements involving individual, partnership, trust, estate, and corporate tax matters.
- Provide strategic tax consulting related to entity structuring, restructuring, estate planning, succession planning, and wealth preservation strategies.
- Advise clients on tax-efficient growth strategies and the impact of legislative and regulatory changes.
- Review and oversee complex tax returns and related filings to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Provide guidance on multi-entity and multi-generational wealth structures.
Transaction & Consulting Services
- Lead tax due diligence engagements for mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and other strategic transactions.
- Analyze tax implications of business transactions and recommend optimal tax structures.
- Assist clients with complex tax research, planning opportunities, and risk management initiatives.
Family Office Services
- Support family office clients with tax planning, financial reporting, personal accounting coordination, and related advisory services.
- Oversee the preparation and review of financial statements and other financial reporting deliverables.
- Collaborate with legal, investment, and wealth management professionals to deliver comprehensive client solutions.
Leadership & Practice Management
- Lead, mentor, and develop tax professionals through coaching, training, and career development initiatives.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, technical excellence, and client service.
- Manage engagement economics, staffing, workflow, and resource allocation.
- Contribute to strategic planning and the continued growth of the tax practice.
- Participate in business development activities, including client relationship management, networking, referral development, and proposal preparation.
Qualifications
Education & Credentials
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or a related field.
- CPA designation required; advanced tax credentials or certifications are a plus.
Experience
- 15+ years of progressive tax experience in public accounting, tax advisory, family office, or related professional services environments.
- Significant experience serving high-net-worth individuals, family offices, trusts, estates, partnerships, and closely held businesses.
- Strong background in tax planning, compliance, and consulting across multiple tax disciplines.
- Experience leading client engagements and managing complex tax matters.
- Previous experience at the Senior Manager level or above preferred.
- Experience with regional, national, or large public accounting firms is welcome.
