Property Accountant

Position Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Property Accountant to manage the day-to-day accounting functions for a portfolio of real estate properties. This role is responsible for full-cycle property accounting, financial reporting, account reconciliations, lender reporting, budget support, and maintaining accurate financial records. The ideal candidate will possess strong accounting knowledge, excellent organizational skills, and experience working within a property management or real estate environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform full-cycle property accounting, including accounts payable oversight, bank reconciliations, journal entries, fixed assets, and monthly financial reporting.
  • Prepare accurate monthly financial statements and management reports using accrual basis accounting.
  • Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts.
  • Prepare monthly work papers, schedules, and supporting documentation.
  • Monitor and manage daily cash balances.
  • Reconcile bank accounts and investigate discrepancies.
  • Review accounts receivable balances, process refunds, and complete write-offs as necessary.
  • Review, approve, and post accounts payable transactions.
  • Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules.
  • Prepare loan draw requests and supporting documentation.
  • Prepare and submit lender reporting packages as required.
  • Process owner distributions and related financial transactions.
  • Assist with annual operating budget preparation and financial forecasting.
  • Monitor property tax and insurance payments.
  • Review operational and project budgets for accuracy and compliance.
  • Ensure adherence to accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Provide accounting support and guidance to property management teams.
  • Assist with special projects, audits, and ad hoc financial reporting requests.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum of 2–3 years of accounting experience, preferably within property management, real estate, or property development.
  • Strong understanding of accrual basis accounting principles.
  • Proficiency with property management and accounting software, including Yardi Voyager or similar platforms.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with multi-family, commercial, or mixed-use property portfolios.
  • Knowledge of lender reporting requirements and construction draw processes.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookups, and financial analysis tools.
  • Experience analyzing financial data, identifying trends, and explaining variances.
