Senior Investment Manager
Background
Matanataki Pte Ltd (MPL) is a woman-founded Fiji incorporated company and developer of climate resilient and gender equitable investment opportunities in the Pacific. MPL is undergoing investor due diligence for a blended finance impact fund for the Pacific, Matanataki Pacific Fund 1 (MPF1 or the “Fund”) providing investors with access to community-owned and community-serving businesses that deliver climate resilience to Pacific communities, with coral reefs as the guiding star indicating the health and climate resilience of the whole. Bringing together institutional and private investors with aligned values, MPF1 will channel investment into long term Pacific-owned businesses which will deliver climate resilience for our ocean communities, playing a hands-on active co-ownership role alongside the business owners and their management teams. MPF1 is now recruiting for key positions.
Role: Senior Investment Manager
Location: Fiji
Employment type: Full-time
Reporting to: Founding GP
About the role
Matanataki is seeking an experienced Senior Investment Manager to play a senior role in the investment team of Matanataki Pacific Fund 1 (MPF1).
The Senior Investment Manager will lead investments across the full transaction lifecycle, from origination, investment readiness (including development and design) and due diligence through structuring, execution, portfolio management, hands on active co-management, value creation and exit. The role will also play an important part in strengthening Matanataki’s investment processes and supporting the development of other members of the investment team.
This is a hands-on investment role suited to an experienced private equity professional who combines transaction execution capabilities with practical experience working alongside management teams to build and grow businesses.
Key Responsibilities
Investment origination and execution
- Originate, evaluate and structure investment opportunities, with a particular focus on mid-market growth businesses and SMEs.
- Lead transactions across the full investment lifecycle, including initial screening, commercial and financial analysis and due diligence, valuation, investment structuring, negotiation, documentation and closing.
- Structure equity investments, including significant minority positions.
- Assess and structure alternative forms of capital, including debt, mezzanine and self-liquidating instruments, where appropriate.
- Support robust portfolio construction and investment decision-making across the Fund.
- Serve on the committee which makes investment, divestment and follow on investment decisions.
Portfolio management and value creation
- Take an active role in portfolio management following investment, working collaboratively with management teams with a hands on co-management approach to strengthen company performance.
- Serve as an active board member or observer for portfolio companies.
- Support exit planning and execution.
- Work closely with Matanataki’s Technical Assistance, Impact and ESG teams to align investment and value creation priorities.
Investment process and team development
- Bring institutional-quality private equity investment processes, tools and methodologies to Matanataki and support their application across the investment lifecycle.
- Provide coaching to other investment team members, helping them progressively take greater ownership of transactions and portfolio responsibilities.
Candidate experience and capabilities
We recognise that strong candidates may bring different combinations of experience and encourage applications from individuals who meet most, rather than necessarily all, of the criteria below.
Investment track record
- At least five years of experience within an established, institutional-quality investment firm, with exposure to robust investment processes, governance, tools and methodologies.
- Private equity or growth equity investment experience, including at least 10 completed transactions across the full investment lifecycle from origination through exit.
- Proven track record of successful investment exits, with direct involvement in exit strategy and execution.
- Meaningful board and governance experience across multiple portfolio companies, ideally including active participation on eight or more boards or equivalent governance bodies.
Relevant investment experience
- Strong experience in mid-market growth equity, particularly investments involving significant minority positions where value creation requires collaboration with and influence of existing management teams rather than direct operational control.
- Investment experience in sectors relevant to MPF1’s strategy, particularly agriculture, food and agricultural processing, manufacturing, FMCG and other real-economy businesses.
- Experience investing in the Pacific or other small-island or frontier markets.
- Experience with climate adaptation or nature-positive investment strategies.
