The FixHRs has been contracted to assist with hiring a Staff Accountant for an Accounting Firm in the Metro Detroit area.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and file individual income tax returns (Form 1040), including related schedules and state/city returns.
- Support bookkeeping activities for clients, including categorizing transactions, monthly reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
- Assist with tax planning, projections, and identifying deductions and opportunities for clients.
- Prepare workpapers for tax engagements and maintain proper documentation in the Canopy client portal.
- Communicate professionally with clients to request documents, clarify information, and provide updates.
- Assist with small business filings, basic entity compliance, and year-end support as assigned.
- Support internal operational tasks such as workflow updates, portal organization, and client onboarding.
Required Qualifications
- Prior experience preparing individual tax returns (1040) strongly preferred.
- Proficiency in QuickBooks Online and familiarity with accounting software tools.
- Strong understanding of accounting principles, reconciliations, and general ledger activity.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- High attention to detail and ability to maintain accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple client tasks.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- CPA candidate or interest in pursuing licensure.
- Experience with tax software (e.g., Drake, UltraTax) and cloud-based systems.
- Prior experience working in a public accounting or tax preparation environment.
Schedule & Work Environment
- 25–30 hours per week, with flexibility during non-peak months.
- Hybrid structure — combination of remote work and in-person office days.
- Additional hours may be available during peak tax season.
