Job Title: Server Rack Assembly Technician
Contract that ends once the project is complete (about 3 months)
Position Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Server Rack Assembly and Configuration Technician to build and configure a custom server rack system based on a defined Bill of Materials (BOM). This position involves mechanical assembly, minor fabrication, electrical wiring, and software configuration of a Windows-based server environment.
The successful candidate will demonstrate strong technical aptitude, precision craftsmanship, and the ability to follow complex build instructions while maintaining high standards of quality and safety.
Key Responsibilities:
Hardware Assembly and Installation
- Assemble a wall-mounted server rack and install all specified hardware components, including enclosures, UPS systems, networking devices, and the server PC.
- Utilize the provided BOM to ensure all listed parts are installed and secured according to best practices.
- Perform minor machining and enclosure modifications (e.g., drilling or cutting cable routing holes) to support efficient wire management based on the installation environment.
- Mount and integrate surge protectors, adapters, couplers, and panel-mounted connectors to ensure accessibility and clean cable routing.
Electrical and Network Cabling
- Route, terminate, and organize Ethernet, HDMI, power, USB, and serial cables per project specifications.
- Ensure proper grounding and power distribution within the rack assembly.
- Test and verify operation of all electrical and data interfaces, including the RJ45 selector switch and associated connectors.
- Label and document all cables, ports, and connections for future maintenance and reference.
Software Installation and Configuration
- Install and configure a Windows operating system image on the provided server PC.
- Set up specified applications and system configurations according to provided documentation.
- Establish and verify network connectivity between the server, Fortinet firewall, and connected devices.
- Document configuration steps, system settings, and installed software for internal records.
System Validation and Quality Assurance
- Conduct comprehensive functional and electrical tests on the completed system.
- Validate UPS operation, network switch functionality, and peripheral connectivity.
- Troubleshoot and resolve any hardware or software issues identified during testing.
- Provide a summary report detailing final system configuration, test results, and any recommendations for improvement.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience assembling and configuring server racks, network enclosures, or industrial control systems.
- Proficiency with light fabrication tools (e.g., drill, step bits) for basic enclosure modification.
- Working knowledge of electrical wiring standards and low-voltage cabling practices.
- Hands-on experience with Windows OS installation and configuration.
- Familiarity with general networking principles preferred.
- Ability to interpret technical documentation, wiring diagrams, and Bills of Materials.
- Excellent organizational, documentation, and communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail, with a commitment to precision and safety.
Tools and Equipment:
Candidates should be proficient in the use of:
- Standard hand tools (screwdrivers, wrenches, crimpers, cable strippers)
- Power drill and step bits for metal or composite enclosures
- Multimeter, continuity tester, and/or network cable tester
- Computer or laptop for imaging and configuration tasks
Deliverables:
- Fully assembled, wired, and labeled 4U server rack system
- Windows-imaged and configured server PC
- Completed wiring documentation and labeling map
